Affordable Sporty Bike Launches in America for Under $5,500

0

You wouldn’t generally associate Royal Enfield with a naked roadster, considering its rich history of classic retros. But the Indian bikemaker has reminded us time and again why it is one of the world’s best bike sellers: its ability to adapt and deliver.

That’s exactly what the company has done with the sparkly new Guerrilla 450. Well, not exactly new per se, considering the motorcycle already debuted in India and Europe last year. But, nevertheless, the entry-level roadster has finally landed in America, going on sale through the brand’s dealership network in the country.

Think of the Guerrilla 450 as a bigger, better Hunter 350, with better handling, ergonomics, and an overall better ride quality. It bridges the gap between the brand’s typical 350cc and 650cc motorcycles, but it represents more than just a new engine. It stands for accessibility for one and all.

Even though it’s targeted at beginners and others who want something different, there’s no reason seasoned riders can’t take a shot at it. In fact, I reckon most people would like the bike!

Let’s start with the 452cc single-cylinder motor borrowed from the Himalayan 450, Royal Enfield’s first liquid-cooled engine. It produces a good 40 horsepower and 29.5 lb-ft (40 Nm) of torque, and pretty much like the Himmy, it features a six-speed gearbox paired with a slip-and-assist clutch.

The ride modes are carried over from its adventure sibling, too – with Eco and Performance modes, which set throttle response accordingly. While there are plenty of similarities between the two, the one thing that the Guerrilla gets differently compared to the Himalayan is the way the engine has been tuned.

I’ve personally ridden the motorcycle here in India, and let me tell you one thing: it’s all about that mid-range power. It’s quite peppy in the city limits but if you plan on pushing it out on the open highways, you might not be as impressed, considering the bike loses its grunt beyond 70 mph (113 km/h).

It sits on a tubular steel frame suspended by 43-mm telescopic forks up front and a monoshock in the rear. Seat height stands at 30.7 inches (780 mm), wheels are 17-inch alloys back and front, and the bike weighs 405 lb (183.7 kg) – around 20 or so pounds lighter than the Himalayan 450. You’ll appreciate its overall lighter weight at slower speeds.

Royal Enfield didn’t hold back on the amenities, too … the analog + digital dial keeps all information nice and easy to read, and comes with the patented Google Tripper navigation. You can also opt for a full digital display as an extra. In other departments, all-LED lighting, dual-channel ABS, and USB charging are all on offer.

Design-wise, there’s plenty to like too. I appreciate all the chassis and design tweaks RE did to the Guerrilla while still retaining some of the Himalayan’s lines. Couple that with the company’s characteristic round headlight and conventional front forks, and you get the classic Royal Enfield retro vibe.

“Modern roadsters look generic, sound synthetic, and feel plastic. The Guerrilla 450 is a declaration of independence from this mind-numbing conformity.” Who knew we’d hear this from Royal Enfield of all manufacturers?

Well, now that it’s finally here, the Guerrilla 450 adds another great option for those considering bikes in this category, which already includes the likes of Triumph Speed 400 and KTM Duke 390, among others. And for a US$5,299 starting MSRP, there’s not a lot of room to go wrong with the Guerrilla.

Anthropic establishes AI advisory council to strengthen connections with Washington | Business and Economic Updates

0

The AI company’s new council comes a month after the Pentagon signed a deal with several AI companies to develop tools for defence.

The artificial intelligence company Anthropic launched a National Security and Public Sector Advisory Council in efforts to deepen ties with Washington and allied governments as AI becomes increasingly central to defence.

The San Francisco-based start-up announced the new panel on Wednesday.

The council’s launch underscores AI firms’ growing efforts to shape policies and ensure their technology supports democratic interests amid global competition.

Anthropic’s new effort comes as rivals, such as OpenAI and Google DeepMind, step up engagement with governments and regulators on AI safety, though neither has announced a dedicated national security advisory council.

Anthropic’s council brings together former senators and senior officials from the US Department of Defense, intelligence agencies, as well as the Departments of Energy and Justice.

It will advise Anthropic on integrating AI into sensitive government operations while shaping standards for security, ethics and compliance.

Its members include Roy Blunt, a former senator and intelligence committee member, David S Cohen, a former deputy CIA director, and Richard Fontaine, who leads the Center for a New American Security.

Other appointees held top legal and nuclear security roles across Republican and Democratic administrations.

Anthropic said the group will advise on high-impact applications in cybersecurity, intelligence analysis and scientific research, while helping set industry standards for responsible AI use.

The company plans to expand the council as partnerships with public-sector institutions grow.

Last month, the Pentagon established a $200m programme to develop AI tools for defence, highlighting the sector’s push to balance innovation with security risks. The initiative reflects intensifying global competition over AI capabilities, with Washington seeking to maintain an edge against rivals, such as China and Russia.

The effort, which includes Anthropic, OpenAI, Alphabet – Google’s parent company, and xAI – the AI company championed by Elon Musk.

Israeli army warns Palestinians that an evacuation of Gaza City is inevitable

The Israeli army wants people to leave Gaza City before moving in

The Israeli military has told Palestinians that the evacuation of Gaza City is “inevitable”, as its forces prepare to conquer it.

In a post on X on Wednesday, the military’s Arabic spokesman Avichay Adraee said families relocating to the south would “receive the most generous humanitarian aid”.

Israeli tanks pushed into a new area of Gaza City overnight, forcing more residents to flee, witnesses said. Thousands have already moved because of recent Israeli advances – mostly to other parts of the city, where about a million Palestinians still live.

The evacuation call comes as US President Donald Trump is expected to chair a meeting on a post-war vision for Gaza at the White House.

In early August, Israel announced plans to occupy the whole Gaza Strip – including Gaza City, which it described as Hamas’s last stronghold.

The UN and non-governmental organisations have warned that an Israeli offensive in Gaza City would have a “horrific humanitarian impact”.

Late on Tuesday, tanks entered the Ibad al-Rahman district, in the city’s northern outskirts, destroying several homes, Reuters news agency reported.

“All of a sudden, we heard that the tanks pushed into Ibad al-Rahman, the sounds of explosions became louder and louder, and we saw people escaping towards our area,” Saad Abed told Reuters in a message from his home in Jala Street, about 1km (0.6 miles) away.

On Wednesday, the tanks reportedly retreated to Jabalia, an area further north where they have been operating.

Bombardment also continued in Gaza City’s Shejaiya, Zeitoun and Sabra districts.

The Israeli military said in a statement on Wednesday that its troops had engaged in combat in the Jabalia area and on the outskirts of Gaza City, adding that they had eliminated a “terrorist cell” and located a weapons storage facility.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Israel’s intention to conquer the entire Gaza Strip after indirect talks with Hamas on a ceasefire and hostage release deal broke down last month.

But Netanyahu is facing both international and domestic pressure.

On Tuesday evening, tens of thousands of protesters gathered in Tel Aviv demanding a ceasefire deal to bring home the remaining Israeli hostages held by Hamas. Only 20 of the 50 hostages are believed to be alive.

In Washington on Tuesday, US special envoy Steve Witkoff said the White House was working on “a very comprehensive plan” for post-war Gaza.

He told Fox News that the plan “for the next day” would be discussed at a “large meeting in the White House” chaired by Trump on Wednesday.

He gave no details but said he expected the conflict in Gaza to be settled “one way or another, certainly before the end of this year”.

Israel’s military launched a campaign in Gaza in response to the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage.

Almost 62,900 people have been killed in Gaza since then, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.

Most of Gaza’s population has also been displaced multiple times; more than 90% of homes are estimated to be damaged or destroyed; and the healthcare, water, sanitation and hygiene systems have collapsed; and UN-backed global food security experts have confirmed that there is famine in the Gaza City area.

Trump’s Housing Chief Bill Pulte transforms into aggressive attack dog, utilizing America’s property records as a powerful weapon

0

When Bill Pulte was nominated as the country’s top housing regulator, he told senators that his “number one mission will be to strengthen and safeguard the housing finance system.”

But since he started the job, he’s distinguished himself by targeting President Donald Trump‘s political enemies. He’s using property records to make accusations of mortgage fraud and encourage criminal investigations, wielding an obscure position to serve as a presidential enforcer.

This week, Trump used allegations publicized by Pulte in an attempt to fire Lisa Cook, a member of the Federal Reserve board, as he tries to exert more control over the traditionally independent central bank.

Pulte claims that Cook designated two homes as her primary residence to get more favorable mortgage rates. Cook plans to fight her removal, laying the groundwork for a legal battle that could reshape a cornerstone institution in the American economy.

Trump said Tuesday that Cook “seems to have had an infraction, and you can’t have an infraction,” adding that he has “some very good people” in mind to replace her.

Pulte has cheered on the president’s campaign with a Trumpian flourish.

“Fraud will not be tolerated in President Trump’s housing market,” he wrote on social media. “Thank you for your attention to this matter.”

Pulte targets Democrats but not Republicans

Pulte, 37, is a housing industry scion whose official job is director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency. He oversees mortgage buyers Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which were placed in conservatorship during the Great Recession almost two decades ago.

Like other political appointees, he routinely lavishes praise on his boss.

“President Trump is the greatest,” he posted over the weekend.

Pulte has made additional allegations of mortgage fraud against Sen. Adam Schiff, one of Trump’s top antagonists on Capitol Hill, and New York Attorney General Letitia James, who filed lawsuits against Trump. Those cases are being pursued by Ed Martin, a Justice Department official.

“In a world where housing is too expensive, we do not need to subsidize housing for fraudsters by letting them get better rates than they deserve,” Pulte wrote on social media.

Pulte has ignored a similar case involving Ken Paxton, the Texas attorney general who is friendly with Trump and is running for Senate in his state’s Republican primary. Paxton took out mortgages on three properties that were all identified as his primary residence.

He also has mortgages on two other properties that explicitly prohibit him from renting the properties out, but both have been repeatedly listed for rent, according to real estate listings and posts on short-term rental sites.

Asked about Pulte’s investigations and Trump’s role in them, the White House said that anyone who violates the law should be held accountable.

“President Trump’s only retribution is success and historic achievements for the American people,” said Davis Ingle, White House spokesman.

It’s unclear whether Pulte is using government resources to develop the allegations he has made. Mortgage documents are generally public records, but they are typically maintained at the county level across most of the U.S., making them difficult to comprehensively review. However, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which are both government-sponsored entities, purchase large tranches of mortgages from lenders, which could centralize much of that information, real estate and legal experts say.

FHFA did not respond to a detailed list of questions from the AP, including whether Pulte or his aides used government resources to conduct his research.

It’s not just mortgages

Pulte’s broadsides go beyond mortgages. He’s been backing Trump’s criticism of Jerome Powell, chair of the Federal Reserve, over expensive renovations at the central bank’s headquarters. Trump is pressuring Powell to cut interest rates in hopes of lowering borrowing costs, and his allies have highlighted cost overruns to suggest that Powell is untrustworthy or should be removed from his position.

“This guy is supposed to be the money manager for the world’s biggest economy, and it doesn’t even look like he can run a construction site,” Pulte said while wearing a neon safety vest outside the building. “So something doesn’t smell right here.”

Since returning to the White House, Trump has reached deep into the government to advance his agenda. He’s overhauled the federal workforce with the Office of Personnel Management, pushed ideological changes at the Smithsonian network of museums and fired the commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics when he didn’t like a recent report on job numbers.

With Pulte in charge, the Federal Housing Finance Agency is becoming another instrument of Trump’s mission to exert control and retaliate against enemies.

It’s a contrast to the Internal Revenue Service, where Trump has unsuccessfully discussed ways to use tax policies as a pressure point. For example, during battles over higher education, Trump threatened to take away Harvard’s long-standing tax-exempt status by saying, “It’s what they deserve.”

However, there are more restrictions there, dating back to the Watergate scandal under President Richard Nixon.

“It’s been hard for the administration to use the inroads it wants to use to pursue its enemies,” said Vanessa Williamson, a senior fellow at the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center.

She said, “The law is very clear about taxpayer privacy and the criminal penalties at play are not small.”

Before going on the attack, Pulte played nice online

Pulte is heir to a home-building fortune amassed by his grandfather, also named William Pulte, who founded a construction company in Detroit in the 1950s that grew into the publicly traded national housing giant now known as the Pulte Group.

He spent four years on the company’s board, and he’s the owner of heating and air conditioning businesses across the U.S. He had never served in government before being nominated by Trump to lead the Federal Housing Finance Agency.

“While many children spent their weekends at sporting events, I spent mine on homebuilding jobsites with my father and grandfather,” Pulte said in written testimony for his nomination hearing. “From the ground up, I learned every aspect of housing — whether it was cleaning job sites, assisting in construction, or helping sell homes.”

He once tried to make a name for himself with good deeds, describing himself as the “Inventor of Twitter Philanthropy” and offering money to needy people online. He was working in private equity at the time, and he told the Detroit Free Press that he funded his donations with some “very good liquidity events” to power his donations.

Even six years ago, he appeared focused on getting attention from Trump.

“If @realDonaldTrump retweets this, my team and I will give Two Beautiful Cars to Two Beautiful Veterans on Twitter.”

Trump replied, “Thank you, Bill, say hello to our GREAT VETERANS!”

Pulte, whose most recent financial disclosure shows a net worth of at least $180 million, was also ramping up his political donations.

Over the past six years, he and his wife have donated over $1 million to the political efforts of Trump and his allies, including a $500,000 contribution to a super PAC affiliated with Trump that was the subject of a campaign finance complaint made with the Federal Election Commission.

The Pultes’ $500,000 contribution was made through a company they control named ML Organization LLC, records show. While such contributions are typically allowed from corporations, the same is not always true for some limited liability companies that have a limited business footprint and could be set up to obscure the donor.

The FEC ultimately exonerated the Pultes, but found in April that the Trump super PAC, Make America Great Again, Again! Inc., did not properly disclose that the Pultes were the source of the donation, said Saurav Ghosh, the Campaign Legal Center’s director of federal campaign finance reform.

Ghosh said the donation raises serious questions about Pulte’s appointment to lead FHFA.

“Why is Bill Pulte even in a government position?” he said. “Maybe he’s qualified, maybe he isn’t. But he did pour hundreds of thousands of dollars into a pro-Trump super PAC. And I think it’s clear there are these types of rewards for big donors across the Trump administration.”

Gorillaz named as ‘Icons’ for Fortnite Festival Season 10

0

English virtual band Gorillaz have been named as the “icons” for Epic GamesFortnite Festival Season 10, coming after the Season 9 Festival with Bruno Mars.

The new season launches Tuesday (August 26), and players will be able to unlock all four Gorillaz members’ outfits, Jam Tracks and accessories via the Season 10 Music Pass, priced at 1,400 V-Bucks (about $11).

Additional tracks including Clint Eastwood and DARE will be available in the Shop.

Gorillaz joins other major artists who have been featured as “icons” on Fortnite, including The Weeknd, Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish, Metallica, Karol G, Snoop Dogg, Hatsune Miku, Bruno Mars, and Sabrina Carpenter.

Created in 1998 by Damon Albarn of alt-rock band Blur and artist Jamie Hewlett in London, Gorillaz have sold over 33 million equivalent albums globally, according to data from Chart Masters.

The group, known for blending animated characters with other collaborators, has produced eight studio albums, three compilation albums, 11 EPs, one remix album and 46 singles.

For the Season 10 Fortnite Festival, multiple Jam Tracks will be available featuring Gorillaz hits. The DARE track comes bundled with a choreographed emote that plays part of the song, while On Melancholy Hill serves as a premium reward.

The Music Pass features two outfits as premium rewards. Russel Hobbs comes auto-unlocked after purchasing the Music Pass, while the Murdoc Niccals outfit comes as a premium reward.

The Noodle & 2D Bundle is also available in the Fortnite Shop, allowing players to get their outfits and accessories including a Noodle mask and a 2D sunglasses. The package also includes back bling items, musical instruments, and the DARE emote with Jam Track.

Beyond the Gorillaz integration, Season 10 introduces several game improvements including adding “Good” notes to make it clearer in the user interface when a user is “just short of ‘Perfect.’” Fortnite says it has also redesigned lift notes “so that it’s easier to tell when to press and when to let go.”

The update also includes enhanced guitar controller calibration, allowing players to strum during the tune-up process. A new Main Stage will also be introduced featuring skyscrapers, a street train and graffiti to match Gorillaz’ aesthetic.

For content creators, Epic Games is offering a seven-day window at the start of Season 10 to monetize videos featuring eligible Gorillaz songs, provided they link their YouTube and Support-A-Creator (SAC) accounts. The eligible tracks include Clint Eastwood and DARE.

After the initial period, Epic Games said: “Content creators should expect to receive monetization claims by the respective rights holders.”

The program reflects Epic Games’ efforts to support creators. In 2023, Epic Games announced that creators of eligible Fortnite “islands” and experiences will receive a share of revenue based on engagement with their published content.

Under Fortnite’s new Creator Economy 2.0 program, Epic Games will place 40% of the net revenue from Fortnite’s Item Shop and related real-money purchases into the engagement pool.

The Fortnite x Gorillaz collaboration coincides with the band’s House of Kong Exhibition at the Copper Box Arena in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford, London. The exhibition opened on August 8 and will run through September 3.

Earlier this month, Epic Games partnered with Sony Music Entertainment to launch an immersive PARTYNEXTDOOR concert experience in Fortnite. The interactive event was developed in collaboration with Sony Immersive Music Studios and OVO Sound, Drake’s label.

Sony Corporation has invested significantly in Epic Games, spending over $1 billion across multiple investment rounds since 2020 to acquire stakes in the Fortnite maker.

Is Trump a Peacemaker or Seeking Political Prestige through Diplomacy? | Donald Trump

0

Donald Trump insists he has halted six wars since taking office, presenting himself as the world’s “peacemaker-in-chief.” The claim has even fueled talk of a Nobel Prize. But is he truly ending wars – or simply shaping peace to suit his politics? Jillian Wolf explains in this week’s Fact Check.

Denmark calls in US diplomat for questioning regarding suspected covert influence operations in Greenland

Denmark has summoned the top US diplomat in the country over reports that American citizens with alleged links to President Donald Trump have been conducting covert influence operations in Greenland.

Lars Løkke Rasmussen, Denmark’s foreign minister, said on Wednesday that there were “foreign actors” attempting to influence the future of Greenland and that all such efforts were “unacceptable”.

He has summoned Mark Stroh, the chargé d’affaires at the US embassy in Copenhagen and its most senior diplomat in Denmark at present, for a meeting at the foreign ministry.

Denmark has been shaken by Trump’s repeated suggestions that the US wants to take control of the vast Arctic island — a semi-autonomous part of the kingdom of Denmark — from Copenhagen, and his refusal to rule out using force to do so.

The Scandinavian country had already summoned the top US diplomat in May, following a report in the Wall Street Journal that a classified message was sent to American intelligence agencies urging them to identify people in Greenland and Denmark who support Trump’s ambition to take over the island.

Denmark has summoned Mark Stroh, the chargé d’affaires at the US embassy in Copenhagen © US Embassy

The latest report by DR, the Danish public broadcaster, said Danish authorities were aware of at least three US citizens with alleged links to the Trump administration gathering information in Greenland and conducting influence operations.

Rasmussen said in television interviews that he was “not surprised” by the report. But he added: “It’s important that we gain some insight into this so that our people — in both Greenland and Denmark — know what it is that we risk being up against.”

Denmark’s security and intelligence service (PET) said on Wednesday that its assessment was that “Greenland, especially in the current situation, is the target of influence campaigns of various kinds. PET expects that such campaigns have the purpose of creating a split in the relationship between Denmark and Greenland.”

Some senior Danish officials sought to downplay the significance of summoning Stroh, saying that the three US citizens appeared to act in an amateur way and there was no link established to US intelligence.

But Danish politicians reacted with dismay. “This means the whole misery over Greenland is not over,” former foreign minister Martin Lidegaard told the TV channel TV2.

He added: “This is putting a heavy strain on our relationship with the US — and Americans should know that too.”

Aaja Chemnitz, a Greenlandic member of Denmark’s parliament, said: “It is beyond a joke that they try to infiltrate Greenland’s society in this way. It is Greenland itself who must decide what we want and what future we want.”

The allegations come just days after the Trump administration caused pain to Danish business by issuing a stop-work order on an almost complete offshore wind farm co-owned by Ørsted.

That came on the same day that Rasmussen and Denmark’s ambassador to the US signed a partnership with California’s Governor Gavin Newsom, the self-styled leader of the resistance to Trump. Danish officials deny there is a connection between the two events.

The US embassy did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The US is currently without an ambassador in Copenhagen despite Trump naming Ken Howery, who is close to Elon Musk, in December.

In a separate move, Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Wednesday apologised to the thousands of Greenlandic women who over decades were forcibly fitted with contraceptive coils.

She acknowledged that the case had caused “anger and sorrow” in Greenland as well as hurting perceptions of Denmark. “We cannot change what has happened. But we can take responsibility. Therefore, on behalf of Denmark, I would like to say: sorry.”

Many Greenlanders use this issue to express why they want to gain independence from Denmark, but surveys suggest the 57,000 on the Arctic island are reluctant to do so imminently for fear of losing out economically.

Cale Martter, Big 12 Champion, Makes Transfer From Arizona State to Georgia

0

By Anya Pelshaw on SwimSwam

Cale Martter will join the Georgia Bulldogs for the upcoming 2025-2026 season. Martter arrives after spending the last three seasons at Arizona State. This past season, he won the Big 12 200 IM conference title.

Martter finished his freshman season at the 2023 Pac-12 Championships with three lifetime bests. He swam to a 9th place finish in the 200 breast (1:53.55) and 400 IM (3:43.71). He also was 18th in the 200 IM (1:44.38).

He made his first NCAA Championships as a sophomore after finishing 3rd in the 200 breast (1:52.19) and 5th in the 200 IM (1:42.28) and 400 IM (3:40.53) at 2024 Pac-12s. At 2024 NCAAs, he helped Arizona State to an NCAA team title as he was 13th in the 200 breast with a 1:52.42 and 13th in the 400 IM with a 3:40.83. He also finished 26th in the 200 IM (1:43.14).

This past season, Martter was slightly off his best times but swam to a Big 12 title in the 200 IM with a season best 1:42.93. He also was 3rd in the 400 IM and 5th in the 200 breast to help Arizona State to the conference title. He just missed NCAAs this past season as he fell on line 31 in the 400 IM.

Martter’s Best SCY Times:

  • 200 breast: 1:52.19 (2024 Pac-12s)
  • 200 IM: 1:42.28 (2024 Pac-12s)
  • 400 IM: 3:40.53 (2024 Pac-12s)

The Georgia men finished 4th out of 11 teams at the 2025 SEC Championships and went on to finish 7th at the 2025 NCAA Championships. Luca Urlando led the way with an NCAA title in the 200 butterfly.

Based on his best times, Martter is a big pick up for the Bulldogs. His best time in the 200 breast would have been 4th at 2025 SECs, an event Georgia had no ‘A’ finalists in as Arie Voloschin was the team’s highest finisher at 16th in a 1:55.59. Martter’s best time in the 200 IM would have been 8th while his 400 IM would have been 7th.

Martter is originally from Atlanta, Georgia so he travels much closer to home for his senior season. Atlanta is about an hour and a half drive from Athens.
