An autographed pair of Adidas EQT Top 10 shoes that Kobe Bryant wore in his first NBA career start with the Los Angeles Lakers have sold for $240,000 at SCP Auctions, the second-largest sum ever paid for a pair of his sneakers.

Kobe Bryant Signed His Adidas EQT Top 10 Sneakers In Early Career Style

According to ESPN’s Dan Hajducky, photo-matching company Sports Investors Authentication matched the shoes to “being worn by Kobe Bryant on January 28, 1997 — Bryant’s first career NBA game as a starter.”

Both shoes are signed, and both autographs include letters of authentication from Professional Sports Authenticator’s authentication arm, PSA/DNA.

“The size 13.5 sneakers show heavy use, with creasing and scuffing throughout. The soles and mudguards exhibit moderate tread wear. Both shoes have been signed by Bryant in bold black permanent marker in his early career style,” the item description reads.

Bryant was selected No. 13 overall by the Charlotte Hornets in the 1996 NBA draft out of Lower Merion High School. The late Hall of Famer was then traded to the Lakers a month later for Vlade Divac.

Per Basketball Reference, Bryant played in 34 games with the Lakers before his first career start, averaging 6.4 points, 1.8 rebounds, 1.0 assists, and 13 minutes per contest.

Bryant Became The Youngest Player To Start An NBA Game

In his first start on Jan. 28, 1997, Bryant scored 12 points on 5-of-11 (45.5%) shooting from the field to go with three rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a block in a 102-83 win over the Dallas Mavericks.

At 18 years, 158 days old, Bryant became the youngest player to start an NBA game in league history.

In February, the Nike Kobe 8 Elite “Lakers Home” sneakers Bryant was wearing when he tore an Achilles in 2013 sold for $660,000 at Sotheby’s. The jersey he donned in that game also sold for $1.2 million.

Then in April, a jersey that was photo-matched to the one he wore during his first regular-season game fetched $7 million. It was the highest amount of money any Bryant item has sold for.

The jersey eclipsed the $5.84 million spent on a game-worn, signed jersey from the 2007-08 season in which Bryant won his lone MVP award.

South Korean tax authorities launch investigation into HYBE following allegations of stock manipulation against Chairman Bang Si-hyuk

0

HYBE, the K-pop giant behind BTS, is facing a tax probe by South Korea’s National Tax Service (NTS) as authorities look into potential violations related to the company’s 2020 initial public offering.

Multiple news outlets out of South Korea, including Korea JoongAng Daily and The Korea Herald reported on Tuesday (July 29) that tax officials visited HYBE’s Seoul headquarters the same day to gather documents and related materials.

The reports said the probe is being conducted by the NTS’s fourth investigation bureau, a unit that handles special and unannounced audits.

Earlier on Tuesday, the NTS announced a broader crackdown targeting 27 companies and individuals suspected of stock manipulation and tax evasion totaling about 1 trillion South Korean won (approx. USD$724 million).

The NTS launched the crackdown over concerns that stock manipulators are harming investors including minority shareholders.

“Due to these unfair practices in the stock market, domestic and foreign investors have turned away from the Korean stock market,” according to a translated text of the NTS’s notice.

South Korea’s National Tax Service

This marks HYBE’s first tax audit since 2022 when Seoul tax officials conducted a routine examination that resulted in the company paying “a multi-billion-won penalty,” according to the Korean media outlets.

The latest tax probe adds to mounting legal pressures facing HYBE, its founder and Chairman Bang Si-hyuk, and former employees.

Last week (July 24), the financial crime unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency raided HYBE’s headquarters as part of an ongoing probe into alleged stock manipulation by Chairman Bang, according to Korean media.

The raid followed reports by Yonhap News Agency and other local news outlets July 16 that South Korea’s Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) decided to forward a complaint against Bang and three other executives alleging violation of the Capital Markets Act.

A search warrant was issued on July 17, according to Allkpop.

According to Korea Economic Daily, regulators suspect that Bang enriched himself unjustly by misleading HYBE investors, including venture capital firms, into believing that the company’s 2020 IPO would be delayed. However, regulators said the IPO plans were proceeding swiftly as evidenced by HYBE’s hiring of an auditor.

In connection with the investigation into HYBE’s IPO, South Korean police raided Korea Exchange offices on June 30, according to Korea JoongAng Daily. There, investigators reportedly secured data related to the listing review process for the K-pop giant and collected evidence for their probe into potential capital markets law violations by Bang.

Following the latest raid on Tuesday, Allkpop reported that HYBE’s Chief Legal Officer Jung Jin Soo sent an internal email to employees urging them to stay calm: “The company is actively cooperating with the authorities to clarify the facts. We will provide a thorough explanation to demonstrate that all matters were handled in compliance with laws and regulations.”

Jung’s email, which was obtained by Allkpop, added: “We are doing everything we can to prevent this situation from causing unnecessary concern among our team. Please do not be overly worried about the investigation at the Yongsan office and continue to concentrate on your individual responsibilities.”

In a separate development last week (July 22) prior to the raid, the Seoul Southern District Court handed down suspended prison terms and fines to three individuals who previously worked for HYBE and its subsidiaries after a Seoul court found them guilty of insider trading.

The trio was found to have benefited from privileged knowledge regarding BTS’s official confirmation of their “hiatus” — due to military enlistment — in June 2022.

Ovrlnd Wide-Body Chubby Pickup Campers Introduce East/West Sleeping Feature

0

If you don’t have a Chubby already, you might just find yourself getting one soon – that is, if you want a tried-and-true pop-up truck topper with a little extra space inside. Arizona shop Ovrlnd Campers’ latest launch isn’t a product but an entire option category. The new “Chubby” package flares each topper out beyond the width of the pickup bed, making space for potential east-to-west sleeping and more interior elbow room. And while going Chubby adds weight over traditional Ovrlnd models, the line remains lighter than loads of alternatives.

The Chubby concept is quite similar to what some full-blown pickup camper manufacturers do in extending sidewalls out past the sides of the truck and what brands like Radica and Tune brought to the topper market. This time, though, the strategy is not focused on any one single model but extended across an entire lineup of pre-existing models.

More specifically, the Chubby option extends the width of both sides of the topper by 3.5 inches (8.9 cm) in comparison to standard models that feature sidewalls extending straight up from the pickup rails. This extension adds an extra 7 inches (17.8 cm) across the interior.

Those extra 3.5 inches per side open up more interior possibilities

Ovrlnd Campers

That doesn’t necessarily sound like much, but when you’re sheltering down inside a space as small as a pickup truck topper, any little bit of extra space will make a difference. And the extra width in this case allows for larger beds, up to and including the possibility of sleeping three or four people instead of the usual two.

Specific dimensions can vary slightly with truck model, but Ovrlnd explains that the wider Chubby box expands the sleeping platform width to 75 inches (191 cm) in an alcove topper prepared for a full-size pickup truck. That results in a bed space measuring a full 75 x 80 in (191 x 203-cm), an inch short of full and proper king-size dimensions. That bed width means anyone 6-foot-ish (~1.8-m) or shorter can lie transversely rather than having to sleep longitudinally, meaning the bed then offers 80 inches of width, 4 inches (10 cm) more than a king.

The 75-in interior width creates a bed that's wide enough for those 6-foot and under to lie across width wise rather than longitudinal, opening up more flexibility in sleeping three or four people (the sleeping platform is collapsed in the photo but extends at camp)

Ovrlnd Campers

So now you can fit three or four people lying side by side down the 80 inches of platform available once you slide out the bed extension, especially if you’re talking about a family with young children and not four burly, beardy hunting buddies. That’s pretty impressive for a simple pickup topper.

The Chubby advantage is even more pronounced in Ovrlnd’s compact, ultralight Bivy – a cube-like pop-top that eliminates the sleeper alcove to cut weight down as low as 205 lb (93 kg). It’s one of the lightest pickup toppers we’ve ever covered, and even with the extra weight of the Chubby wide body, weighs in around 230 lb (104 kg) for a basic shell version before options.

Without an alcove to extend the sleeping platform, fitting a full-length bed in the Bivy is a little trickier and best left to 6-foot+ truck bed sizes unless you're under 5.5 feet or don't mind going diagonal and/or sleeping with bent knees

Ovrlnd Campers

The full-size truck Bivy Chubby model brings in that 75 inches of interior width, opening up the same ability to sleep east/west across the pickup box. That not only serves to spin you around from the longitudinal bed Ovrlnd offers on the standard-width Bivy, it opens up the possibility of creating a proper-length bed on a 5.5-foot short bed.

By widening out the sleeping platform, you now have that 75 inches of available lie-down length, whereas you’re limited to a sub-6-ft longitudinal bed measuring roughly 66 x 60 in (168 x 152-cm) in the standard-width Bivy – too short for average-height males to use without having to contort. A 66 x 75-in bed, on the other hand, provides enough space to lie flat, so long as you’re around 6 feet (72 in/183 cm) or under.

Lying down on one of the longitudinal sleeper platforms inside the midsize truck Bivy Chubby - the midsize variant doesn't offer enough width to lie transversely, but the 6-foot bed provides the length; alternatively a full-size model will provide 75 inches of width

Alternatively, a Bivy Chubby crafted for a full-size truck model will provide 75 inches of width, offering comfortable sleeping potential even in a 5.5-foot pickup short bed

Ovrlnd Campers

The Chubby interior is more limited when built for midsize truck models because their narrower pickup boxes mean it offers only 68 inches (173 cm) of internal width. Still, it does open up a roomier sleeping area than available in standard Ovrlnd variants.

Of course, the added width doesn’t come without some downsides. Ovrlnd is quite forthright about what those are, wanting its customers to make the best choice between its traditional truck-width models and the new Chubby variants.

First off, you’re looking at between 30 to 50 extra pounds (13.6 to 22.7 kg) of weight, depending upon Ovrlnd model and truck make/model/bed size. Ovrlnd’s campers are quite lightweight, though, so that extra weight may not prove a major issue, but it’s certainly part of the overall equation.

Other downsides include more wind resistance due to the wider front wall and some slight handling degradation because of the added weight hanging off the sides. The wider body may also become an obstacle when navigating particularly tight trails, from rocky canyon bottlenecks to gnarled tree branches overhanging a dirt path.

Because of the extra width, the available Chubby barn doors only open 180 degrees as shown, not all the way back to secure to the sidewalls

Ovrlnd Campers

Finally, unlike the 270-degree-swinging split rear barn doors available on traditional Ovrlnd models, the Chubby models are limited to 180-degree door openings. Ovrlnd tested longer 270-degree hinges on its prototype but ultimately found them too susceptible to torsional forces that could cause problems with misalignment and closure security. So it’s using shorter 180-degree hinges on the production version with a latch system that keeps the doors open at camp and prevents wind from slamming them shut. They redesigned Chubby doors just won’t swing all the way around to the sidewalls as on standard-body toppers.

The Chubby option adds $950 to the cost of any of Ovrlnd’s three existing models: the $7,400+ Bivy pop-up cube, the $8,400+ specced-to-order All You Can Eat alcove pop-top, and the $11,499+ standardly equipped Bread ‘N’ Butter alcove popper. It can be ordered now, along with an extensive offering of options. Each Ovrlnd topper features honeycomb aluminum panels atop a square-tube aluminum frame.

Ovrlnd’s newest video below provides a thorough look at its first Chubby Bivy build, and this older video shows a similar in-depth dive of the Chubby alcove prototype.

Pacific Evacuations Triggered by Massive Earthquake Lead to Reduced Tsunami Warnings

Watch: Major earthquake off Russia triggers widespread tsunami warnings

Tsunami alerts have been scaled back across much of the Pacific after one of the world’s strongest earthquakes struck Russia’s Far East.

The 8.8 magnitude quake struck near the Kamchatka Peninsula at 11:25 local time on Wednesday (00:25 BST) – triggering tsunami warnings that led to more than two million people being ordered to evacuate in areas including parts of Russia, Japan, and the US state of Hawaii.

Despite the earthquake’s strength, there were no reports of severe damage or injury.

“The disaster we were expecting did not come,” a Hawaii tourist told the BBC.

Thousands of people along the coast there fled for higher ground as waves of 1.2m hit Oahu, and even larger ones of 1.7m struck Maui.

Governor Josh Green did not hold back when he warned residents: “It is not a regular wave. It will actually kill you if you get hit by a tsunami.”

However, a few hours later he reported that: “So far we have not seen a wave of consequence.”

The tsunami warning for Hawaii was downgraded to an advisory level by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC), meaning there is the potential for strong waves, currents and minor flooding, but a major tsunami is no longer expected.

The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency director, Stephen Logan, later said those evacuated could return home but urged people to be careful, drive slowly, and watch for flooding.

Crescent City in northern California, on the west coast of the US, recorded waves of up to 1.09m (3.6ft), according to the National Tsunami Warning Centre.

Further south, there were tidal surges of up to 0.7m in San Francisco. In Los Angeles, the weather service said Port San Luis was seeing a “rapid and damaging surge, going from low to high tide”.

British Columbia, in Canada, issued a tsunami advisory for most coastal areas, where residents were told to avoid the ocean and await the all-clear. This was later cancelled.

In Russia, where the quake originated, tsunami waves of up to 5m (16ft) struck areas including Severo-Kurilsk, a port town of about 2,000 people, which was evacuated.

No major injuries or damage were reported and officials later lifted the tsunami warning for Kamchatka, although it was later reported the Klyuchevskoy Volcano had begun erupting.

Russia’s Geophysical Survey said red-hot lava had been observed flowing down the western slope of the volcano, which erupts regularly.

The Sakhalin region declared a state of emergency in the northern Kuril islands, where the power grid was shut down after it was damaged by the quake.

Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov described it as the most powerful earthquake the region has experienced in decades. At least six aftershocks followed, including one measuring 6.9.

A map showing where the quake hit, in relation to Russia, China and Japan. It struck near the southern part of the Kamchatka Peninsular, which is north of Japan.

In Japan, thousands were woken by tsunami sirens, with waves more than a metre high hitting the Pacific coast, particularly in Iwate prefecture where nearly two million people were told to evacuate.

Authorities later downgraded the tsunami warning to advisory for many areas, spanning from the north of Tokyo down to Wakayama in the south-west.

Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said there was no confirmation of any damage so far.

At the Fukushima nuclear plant, all 4,000 workers were evacuated, but the plant’s operators said there were no “abnormalities” detected.

In March 2011, the plant was hit by a devastating 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami, leading to a nuclear meltdown.

In French Polynesia, officials raised predicted wave heights for Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas Islands to 4m, with smaller waves of just under a metre expected on surrounding islands.

The French High Commission there later said wave heights had reached only 1.5m.

Tsunami alerts were also issued for Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, with coastal residents told to evacuate to higher ground.

China’s alert for Zhejiang Province and Shanghai was lifted, with no reported damage, while the Philippines and Taiwan also cancelled their alerts.

Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Australia, Colombia, Mexico, New Zealand and Tonga were all warned of possible smaller tsunami wave activity between 1m-3m.

In Peru, officials issued a tsunami warning and closed 65 of its 125 Pacific ports. Some roads were also closed near a beach in Lima, Peru’s capital.

Wednesday’s earthquake occurred in a “seismically active” part of the world called the Pacific Ring of Fire. About 80% of the world’s earthquakes occur along the ring, according to the British Geological Survey.

Kamchatka lies close to one of these plate boundaries, as does Japan, the Philippines, and the Pacific coast of much of the Americas.

The earthquake was the joint sixth largest-ever recorded along with previous ones off the coasts of Chile and Ecuador. The fifth-largest, a 9.0 earthquake, also occurred near Kamchatka in 1952. It resulted in a 12m-high tsunami to the south of the peninsula.

Three Steps to Help Gen Z Retire as Millionaires, According to ‘Shark Tank’ Star Rashaun Williams

0

Dreams of a comfortable retirement feel increasingly out of reach for young people—especially as even boomers, who spent decades saving, are now being forced back into the workforce. For Gen Z, it’s easy to feel hopeless and turn to bad financial habits like doom spending as a coping mechanism.

But the possibility of Gen Z retiring as millionaires may not be as complicated as the generation thinks it is. With proper financial planning, Gen Z can easily have seven figures to their name, according to Rashaun Williams, a multimillionaire venture capitalist returning as a guest judge on Shark Tank this upcoming season.

The secret, he tells Fortune, relies on just following three simple steps: establishing an emergency fund, maxing out retirement accounts, and keeping investments simple.

The ‘Shark Tank’ investor’s 3 steps for Gen Z wanting to become millionaires: 1. Create an emergency fund

The path toward million-dollar wealth can’t begin without planning for the unexpected, such as a job loss or medical emergency. Williams says an emergency fund should start with saving up three months worth of expenses into your savings account.

“Make sure you have enough cash for a rainy day, so you’re not pulling from your 401(k) prematurely,” Williams tells Fortune.

For those who want to be a little extra careful—or are unlucky enough to have  life throw wrenches their way—many financial institutions, like Wells Fargo, suggest that up to six months’ worth of expenses could be worth it.

2. Maxing out your 401(k) and Roth IRA

Saving money using tax-advantaged accounts, like a 401(k) or Roth IRA, remains one of the most efficient ways to grow your wealth. Williams says Gen Z  should try to put as much money within their budgets into retirement accounts.

“If you just do that from 25 to 50 years old, you’re going to retire a millionaire,” Williams says. “…Just by maxing out your 401(k), it grows tax deferred, and it goes in tax-free. There’s no better return than to get your returns without taxes.”

The standard 401(k) limit for employee salary deferrals is about $23,500 in 2025. The maximum amount you can contribute each year to a Roth IRA is $7,000 for those under 50 (though your income must be below a certain adjusted income threshold).

Fidelity recommends individuals save at least 15% of their annual income for retirement—something that can be a tough ask for those Gen Z early in their career.

But, it’s a number that fellow Shark Tank star Kevin O’Leary has echoed: “Take 15% of your salary each week, or every two weeks when you get paid, and put it into an investment account, and never touch it until you turn 65,” O’Leary told Us Weekly in 2023. “That’s how you will retire a multimillionaire.”

In reality, the average savings rate is about 14.1%, according to Fidelity. Taking advantage of any employer match program is also important.

3. Keep investments simple

While there are many ways to invest money—including seemingly fun opportunities like individual stocks or cryptocurrencies—Williams encourages people to keep their choices simple. He specifically called out S&P 500 indexes as one of the best places to invest, with a long history of sustained growth. After all, it delivered an average return of about 10% over the last century, helping usher an unprecedented level of millionaires and billionaires.

“You don’t have to get cute, you don’t need international, you don’t need bonds. You’re not 90 years old. Just do S&P,” Williams tells Fortune.

4. A bonus tip for Gen Z wanting to become millionaires before retirement

For many young people, becoming a millionaire is more than just a retirement dream—it’s an aspiration they want to hit as soon as possible. And while for some, hitting financial goals will mean temporarily saying goodbye to expensive lattes or a vacation to Europe, one of the best ways to build wealth is to simply create your own venture.

“Start something that you can invest in, that you can grow, and start your own business,” said multimillionaire Shark Tank investor Robert Herjavec. “It’s the only path to wealth.”
