Sam Kendricks Dust Your Boots Off Invite

Texas suited up for its own invite on Friday night to kick off their season. There were no other teams in attendance as Texas split its team in two for an Orange vs White matchup.

Women’s Recap

Campbell Stoll swam to three wins on the day. She won the 200 fly in a 1:53.35, a time that was not far off of her 1:52.29 that she swam at the 2025 NCAA Championships for a 7th place finish. She also won the 200 IM in a 1:56.44, another event she raced at 2025 NCAAs. Her final win came in the 100 fly as she touched in a 51.38, marking a personal best as her previous best was a 51.44 from last November’s dual meet against Indiana.

2025 NCAA Champion Jillian Cox earned two wins on the day, touching first in the 1000 free in a 9:24.82. Her lifetime best is a 9:24.39 that she swam on her first 1000 of the 1650 free at 2025 SECs. Cox also won the 500 free in a 4:38.28 to finish a second and a half ahead of Lillie Nesty who touched in a 4:39.96.

That was not Nesty’s only 2nd place finish of the day as she was out touched in the 100 backstroke by 0.01. Nesty touched in a 52.27, just behind Berit Berglund who swam a 52.26. Nesty’s 100 back time marked a personal best as her previous best was a 52.60 from high school.

Nikolett Padar made waves in her Texas debut as the Hungarian native earned two wins. She touched first in the 200 free in a 1:44.03 as well as in a 48.41 in the 100 free. It took a 1:44.74 in the 200 free to earn an invite to 2025 NCAAs.

The relay team of Emma Kern, Piper Enge, Eva Okaro, and Erin Gemmell swam to a 1:36.90 in the 200 medley relay. Texas swam a 1:34.00 for 6th in the relay at 2025 NCAAs but Enge is the only returning member from that relay. Enge earned the individual win in the 100 breast with a 59.82 while Okaro won the 50 free in a 21.86.

Other event winners include Sarah Rodrigues who won the 200 back in a 1:54.99 and Avery Collins who won the 200 breast in a 2:12.85.

Men’s Recap

Hubert Kos and Will Modglin battled it out in the backstroke races at the meet. Modglin led off the winning 200 medley team that also included Campbell McKean, Kyle Peck, and Rafael Fente-Damers to a win as the team touched in a 1:23.98. Kos was slightly faster on the lead off led with a 20.75 compared to Modglin’s 20.96.

Modglin earned the touched in the 100 backstroke though, posting a 44.83 to finish ahead of Kos who swam a 44.96. The two were on the team’s 400 medley relay at 2025 NCAAs as Modglin led off in a 44.37 while Kos swam the fly leg with a 43.35. Kos, the NCAA record holder, won the 200 backstroke today in a 1:40.48 to touch ahead of Texas A&M transfer Baylor Nelson who touched in a 1:42.91. Kos also won the 200 IM in a 1:43.71

American Record holder Rex Maurer earned two wins on the day as he won the 200 free in a 1:33.24 while Nelson was 2nd again in a 1:34.03. Maurer also swam to a 4:12.11 in the 500 free, touching ahead of David Johnston who swam to a 4:14.78. Johnston won the 1000 free in a 8:47.75.

Freshman Rafael Fente-Damers won the sprint freestyle events first winning the 50 free in a 19.39 before following that up with a 42.47 in the 100 free. Fente-Damers represents France at the international level and has not competed in short course yards since 2017.

Will Scholtz in the win in the 200 breast in a 1:54.02, touching just ahead of freshman Campbell McKean was not far off his lifetime best in the 200 breast as he swam to a 1:54.92. His lifetime best is a 1:53.54 from last December at Winter Juniors West. Nate Germonprez won the 100 breast in a 51.54.

Other winners on the day include Cooper Lucas who swam to a 1:42.39 in the 200 fly, only a second and a half off his best (1:40.86) from 2025 NCAAs. Logan Walker won the 100 fly in a 46.98.

Concept for Royal Navy’s Future Amphibious Strike Vessel

0

What will the Royal Navy’s amphibious strike force of the future look like? Design consultancy BMT Group has its own answer as it unveils Ellida Strike concept multi-role strike vessel designed to put combat troops ashore without port facilities.

One of the rarest and most difficult capabilities of any nation to attain is force projection. That is, the independent capability of sending a military expeditionary force anywhere in the world and maintaining it there indefinitely. Currently, only the United States and Britain arguably have this capability, though the latter may lack this for the next eight years.

It’s not a matter of overall military strength, but having the right mixture of equipment and logistical support. This projection is dependent in large part on the ability to land troops, often on hostile shores. That requires amphibious assault ships that can carry helicopters, drones, troops, vehicles, and supplies. These long-range ships are notable in that they have the ability to sink into the water to flood their well-deck to deploy and pick up landing craft.

The problem is that the Royal Navy’s only two amphibious assault ships, HMS Bulwark and HMS Albion, have been decommissioned years before their planned retirement and have already been sold to Brazil for £20 million (US$27 million).

The decision is controversial, with the government arguing that neither ship is fit for service, would cost far too much to repair, and the upgrade would take them beyond their retirement age anyway. Meanwhile, critics point out that £72 million (US$97 million) has already been spent on a refit and that their replacements, the Multi-Role Support Ships (MRSS), will take until 2033 to come online and might not be fit for purpose.

The Ellida Strike assault ship

BMT

To address this, BMT recently put forward its concept for what the next generation of assault ships for the Navy could look like and how it will meet the strategic needs of tomorrow.

The Ellida Strike is the latest in BMT’s Ellida family of ships and is designed specially to meet the Navy’s Multi-Role Strike Ship (MRSS) program requirements. The result is a modular vessel that’s flexible and adaptable for a wide range of missions, beyond amphibious combat to include humanitarian aid and disaster relief.

This is due to the use of containerized pods that are like the ones in the old Thunderbirds television series where the superplane Thunderbird 2 was fitted out with specific pods for specific missions. In the case of Ellida Strike, this can include medical support, command and control, logistics, or combat operations.

In addition to its modularity, the Ellida Strike can be equipped with long-range precision missile systems and it has enough surplus power to support directed energy weapons. Because it has a “for but not with” approach to weapon systems, it can be quickly refitted and upgraded. Since this is a 21st-century warship, it has advanced digital systems for network communications and modern command-and-control systems.

Because it’s a concept, the Ellida Strike’s specifications haven’t been released, but if it’s similar to previous variants, it will be about 200 m (660 ft) long, displace about 27,800 tonnes, be capable of speeds in excess of 18 knots (21 mph, 33 km/h), and have a range of about 8,500 nautical miles (9,800 miles, 15,700 km). Crew estimates could be 150 personnel with 300 embarked troops.

“Whilst Ellida Strike is not the final answer, it’s a strong foundation for further development,” said Tim Neild CBE, Head of Business Development, UK & Europe at BMT. “It invites discussion, collaboration and refinement. As the Royal Navy continues to shape its requirements, we stand ready to adapt and evolve our design to meet the needs of tomorrow’s operations. This concept represents a capability-led approach to design – showcasing what’s possible and demonstrating that BMT has both the expertise and the openness to partner as requirements mature.”

US Faces Accusations of ‘Immoral Military Threat’ from Venezuela Foreign Ministry

0

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil Pinto has told the United Nations General Assembly that the United States has an “illegal and completely immoral military threat hanging over our heads”, as reports emerge that the US is planning to escalate attacks on the South American country.

Pinto told the gathering of UN member states on Friday in New York that his country was grateful for the support of governments and people “that are speaking out against this attempt to bring war to the Caribbean and South America”.

The minister claimed US threats towards his country were aimed at allowing “external powers to rob Venezuela’s immeasurable oil and gas wealth”.

He also accused Washington of using “vulgar and perverse lies” to “justify an atrocious, extravagant and immoral multibillion-dollar military threat”.

Earlier on Friday, US broadcaster NBC News reported that US military officials are drawing up plans to “target drug traffickers inside Venezuela” with air attacks, citing two unnamed US officials.

US President Donald Trump said last week that US forces had carried out a third strike targeting a vessel he said was “trafficking illicit narcotics”. At least 17 people have been killed in the three attacks.

Experts have cast doubt on the legality of US attacks on foreign boats in international waters, while data from both the UN and the US itself suggest that Venezuela is not a major source of cocaine coming into the US, as Trump has claimed.

In an address to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, Trump said of drug smugglers: ” To every terrorist thug smuggling poisonous drugs into the United States of America, please be warned that we will blow you out of existence.”

By contrast, Colombian President Gustavo Petro used his UNGA address to call for a “criminal process” to be opened against Trump over the attacks on vessels in the Caribbean, which had killed Venezuelans who had not been convicted of any crime.

The US has so far deployed eight warships to international waters off Venezuela’s coast, backed by F-35 fighter jets sent to Puerto Rico, in what it calls an anti-drug operation.

Washington has also refused an appeal for dialogue from Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro, whom the Trump administration has accused of drug trafficking – a claim Maduro has strenuously denied.

Maduro and his late predecessor, Hugo Chavez, had once been regular presences at the annual UNGA meetings taking place in New York, but Maduro did not come this year, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio describing him as a fugitive from justice over a US indictment on drug-trafficking allegations.

Back home in Venezuela, Maduro has called for military drills to begin on Saturday, to test “the people’s readiness for natural catastrophes or any armed conflict” amid US “threats”.

‘Our fishermen are peaceful’

Venezuelan fishers who spoke to the AFP news agency said that the US strikes on Venezuelan boats have made them fearful to venture too far from shore.

“It’s very upsetting because our country is peaceful, our fishermen are peaceful,” Joan Diaz, 46, told AFP in the northern town of Caraballeda.

“Fishermen go out to work, and they [the US] have taken these measures to come to our … workplace to intimidate us, to attack us,” he said.

Diaz said most fishers stay relatively close to shore, but that “to fish for tuna, you have to go very far, and that’s where they [the US forces] are.”

Luis Garcia, a 51-year-old who leads a grouping of some 4,000 fishermen and women in the La Guaira region, described the US actions as “a real threat”.

“We have nine-, 10-, 12-metre fishing boats against vessels that have missiles. Imagine the madness. The madness, my God!” he exclaimed.

“We keep contact with everyone … especially those who are going a little further,” he said.

“We report to the authorities where we are going, where we are, and how long our fishing operations will last, and we also report to our fishermen’s councils,” Garcia said.

But, Garcia added, they would not be intimidated.

“We say to him: ‘Mr Donald Trump, we, the fishermen of Venezuela … will continue to carry out our fishing activities. We will continue to go out to the Caribbean Sea that belongs to us.’”

Sinclair and Nexstar to bring back Kimmel on ABC channels

Jimmy Kimmel Live! will now appear again on all ABC channels.

Sinclair Broadcast Group and Nexstar Media Group announced on Friday they will bring the show back to their ABC affiliates after a week-long ban.

The two companies, which carry dozens of ABC stations across the US, pulled the programme over comments Kimmel made about Charlie Kirk’s death.

Sinclair decided to reinstate the late-night talk show after “thoughtful feedback from viewers, advertisers, and community leaders”.

Kimmel was also briefly suspended from all of ABC, and returned to the network on Tuesday.

“It was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man,” he said in his opening monologue that night.

By lifting the blackout, Sinclair and Nexstar viewers in cities like Washington, DC, Nashville, New Orleans and Seattle can now watch Kimmel’s show again.

Sinclair said in a press release its discussions with ABC and parent company Disney are “ongoing and constructive”. The media conglomerate said it had suggested measures to promote “accountability” within Disney.

None of those measures have been adopted yet, it said.

Nexstar also cited positive discussions with ABC, saying in a press release that they “appreciate their constructive approach to addressing our concerns”. The company said it is “committed to protecting the First Amendment”.

What happened?

Kimmel landed in hot water after his 15 September monologue on conservative firebrand Kirk’s death.

He said US President Donald Trump and his allies were “desperately trying to characterise this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them” and trying to “score political points from it”.

He also likened Trump’s reaction to the influencer’s murder to “how a four-year-old mourns a goldfish”.

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chair Brendan Carr, who was appointed by Trump, threatened to revoke ABC’s broadcast licence during an interview with a conservative podcast.

After Carr’s comments, Sinclair and Nexstar said they would stop airing the show on their dozens of ABC affiliates.

ABC then pulled the show off the air entirely.

This triggered nationwide debates about free speech, including online trends of people canceling their Disney+ subscriptions.

Kimmel’s comeback

Disney announced on Monday that Kimmel would return to air, but Sinclair and Nexstar maintained they would not air it.

His return show on Tuesday drew record ratings, with 6.26 million people watching it live despite a quarter of ABC stations not airing it.

Kimmel expressed regret about his earlier joke about Kirk, but also went after Trump and Carr for what he called “mob” censorship tactics.

“Our leader celebrates people losing their livelihoods because he can’t take a joke,” Kimmel said, adding that Trump openly rooting for people to lose their jobs was “un-American” and “dangerous”.

Trump was openly disappointed in Kimmel’s reinstatement.

“I can’t believe ABC Fake News gave Jimmy Kimmel his job back,” he wrote in a social media post.

Newly Released Epstein Records Reveal Musk, Thiel, and Bannon’s Connections Years After Sex-Offender Plea

0

Newly disclosed records from Jeffrey Epstein‘s estate, released Friday by the House Oversight Committee Democrats, show that Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Peter Thiel and Steve Bannon were all listed on Epstein’s calendars in the years before his 2019 arrest.

The tranche — more than 8,500 documents including phone logs, flight manifests and daily schedules — suggests that Epstein maintained ties with more of the world’s wealthiest and most politically connected figures than previously known after his 2007 plea deal that forced him to register as a sex offender.

The documents don’t necessarily implicate wrongdoing by Musk, Thiel, Bannon, or others mentioned. Still, the schedules highlight how Epstein’s social circle included tech moguls, financiers, royals, and political strategists years after his first conviction.

High-profile names, tentative meetings

A December 2014 schedule includes the entry: “Reminder: Elon Musk to island Dec. 6 (is this still happening?).” At the time, Epstein owned a private island in the U.S. Virgin Islands that became infamous for serving as the site of sex trafficking.

Later entries show Epstein penciling in a lunch with Thiel, the billionaire venture capitalist and GOP donor, on November 27, 2017, and a breakfast with Bannon on February 16, 2019 — just months before Epstein was charged with sex trafficking. That meeting came while Bannon remained a prominent figure in Trump’s political orbit.

Other pages reference Prince Andrew on a May 2000 flight with Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell from New Jersey to Florida.

Democrats on the Oversight Committee framed the releases as a step toward transparency.

“It should be clear to every American that Jeffrey Epstein was friends with some of the most powerful and wealthiest men in the world,” spokesperson Sara Guerrero said in a press release. “Every new document produced provides new information as we work to bring justice for the survivors and victims.”

The references to Musk, Thiel, and Bannon tie them to Epstein years after his 2007 conviction — a time when critics say he leveraged weak oversight to maintain connections with powerful figures.

Musk’s mention is notable as he has publicly accused Trump of hiding Epstein-related records earlier this year, saying the files should be released in full.

Representatives for Musk, Bannon, and Thiel did not respond to requests for comment.

Netanyahu faces protests and calls for sanctions at UN meeting in the wake of Gaza crisis | United Nations News

New York City – Thousands of New Yorkers joined world diplomats in giving Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the cold shoulder as he spoke at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Protesters on Friday morning rallied against the Israeli prime minister on the streets of New York City as dozens of delegates marched out of the UN Assembly hall when he began his speech on the fourth day of the General Debate.

And blocks away, diplomats representing countries across the world were meeting as part of the Hague Group to discuss taking concrete measures against Israel, including sanctions, for its nearly two-year assault on Gaza.

Al-Sharif Nassef, who was participating in the New York protest, said it was a “shame” that Netanyahu was in the city instead of The Hague to answer to his alleged war crimes at the International Criminal Court (ICC), which issued an arrest warrant for him last year.

“All the New Yorkers who are here today support his arrest. He is not welcome here,” Nassef told Al Jazeera.

“And Inshallah [God willing], under the new mayorship, he will be arrested as soon as he steps forward in New York City.”

Earlier this month, New York Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamadani promised to enforce the ICC’s arrest warrant against Netanyahu. But the US is not a party to the tribunal, so it is not clear whether the New York Police Department has the legal power to detain the Israeli prime minister.

‘Is baby formula Hamas?’

After Netanyahu finished his speech, protesters marched from Times Square to a park near the UN complex on the East River.

They waved Palestinian flags and chanted “free Palestine” and “arms embargo now” as the demonstration snaked through the streets amid heavy police presence.

Some demonstrators also displayed the flags of Colombia and Ireland – two countries that have been vocal in their support for Palestinians.

Nasreen Issa, a member of the Palestine Youth Movement – NYC, which helped organise the march, said the large turnout sends a message that it is “unacceptable” for the US to roll out the red carpet for Netanyahu.

Issa said that demonstrations work even if their effects are not immediately felt.

“Protests play an important role in generating the political will that can make real change happen,” the activist told Al Jazeera.

Meagan Fredette held a cardboard sign that said, “Is baby formula Hamas???” to highlight the Israeli restrictions on basic food items in Gaza, which have plunged the territory into deadly famine, according to a UN-backed monitor.

Fredette said she feels “disgusted” as a New Yorker that Netanyahu is in her city.

“I feel angry. It’s embarrassing that he’s here. He doesn’t deserve to be here,” she told Al Jazeera. “He’s a literal, wanted criminal. New Yorkers were not happy that he’s here.”

As the demonstrators arrived outside the security perimeter at the UN, they encountered about a dozen counterprotesters waving Israeli flags.

But law enforcement officers separated the two sets of protesters and confined the small pro-Israel rally to a barricaded area.

When a man with an Israeli flag started shouting obscenities at the anti-Netanyahu demonstrators, the police quickly intervened and ordered him to move away from the protest.

Broadcasting Netanyahu’s speech through Palestinian phones

Inside the UN General Assembly hall earlier, Netanyahu addressed a room that was partly emptied by the walkout, and he received applause that came only from one area on the upper level of the room.

Asked whether the people clapping for Netanyahu were guests of the Israeli mission, Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, only said, “Every delegation is allowed to bring in guests.”

Netanyahu’s office said on X that the prime minister had ordered the hacking of the phones of Palestinians in Gaza to stream his speech on the devices.

“In an unprecedented action, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu … has announced that the [Israeli military] took control of the telephones of Gaza residents and Hamas members, and that his speech is now being broadcast live via the telephones,” the post said.

His office also posted on social media that the Israeli military broadcast the address on a loudspeaker to the starving and beleaguered population of the territory.

Al Jazeera asked Dujarric for a reaction to a UN function being used as a tool to taunt an entire population, but he declined to respond.

“I have no specific comment on that,” the spokesperson said.

“I think the focus should be on alleviating the suffering of the Palestinian people, getting more humanitarian aid in, and getting the hostages out,” Dujarric added.

Israel has killed more than 65,500 people in Gaza, including approximately 20,000 children, and turned nearly the entire territory into rubble.

The UNGA is meeting this year amid growing international anger at Israel’s conduct. Several Western countries that are traditionally allied with Israel recognised the state of Palestine during the assembly.

Hague group meeting

On Friday, diplomats from 24 countries – part of the Hague Group, which aims to halt the war on Gaza – called for action to stop the atrocities beyond statements and symbolism.

Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian ambassador to the UN, urged tangible moves against Israel, including sanctions.

“We are out of time because if we fail to act, children are killed,” Mansour told a Hague Group meeting.

“Palestinian children are killed, starved, orphaned, burned and traumatised, families are shattered, life is destroyed, lands are stolen and territories are annexed.”

Mansour also called for international support for South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.

The meeting included representatives from Colombia, South Africa, Qatar, Turkiye, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Ireland, Spain and Uruguay.

Israel’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira warned against failing to stop Israeli atrocities.

“International law requires states not only to refrain from committing genocide, but also to prevent it. Failure to do so may give rise to state responsibility, including for complicity in genocide,” he said.

“Time has come for States to fulfil their obligations under the Genocide Convention by adopting effective measures to ensure that they do not, directly or indirectly, collaborate with its perpetrators.”
