Israelis have gathered across the country to mark two years since the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over an end to the war in Gaza.

The attack saw over 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as hostages. It was the single deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.

Israel responded by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, according to the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are seen as reliable by the UN and other international bodies.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement that alongside “immense pain”, Israel had shown “miraculous resilience”.

“Our bloodthirsty enemies have hit us hard, but they have not broken us,” Netanyahu said on Tuesday.

He vowed to “achieve all the goals of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to Israel”.

Recalling Hamas’s attack on southern Israel two years ago, UN Secretary General António Guterres said: “The horror of that dark day will be forever seared in the memories of us all”.

He also called on all parties to agree to US President Donald Trump’s peace plan, describing it as a “historic opportunity” to “bring this tragic conflict to an end”.

The Israeli government delayed official memorials until 16 October – after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season – but events still took place across the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the families of Israelis killed in the Hamas attack was held in Tel Aviv. Organised by the families themselves, it was broadcast across Israeli television channels.

Hours earlier, a minute’s silence was observed across the country.

Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams convened in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of indirect talks to discuss the terms of the proposal.

A senior Palestinian official familiar with the negotiations told the BBC that an evening round of indirect talks began at 19:00 Cairo time (17:00 GMT).

The official said the morning session ended without tangible results, amid disagreements over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not resume fighting after the first phase of the deal.

He added that the talks are “tough and have yet to produce any real breakthrough,” but noted that mediators are working hard to narrow the gaps between the two sides.

Earlier, a Palestinian official said the negotiations were focused on five key issues: a permanent ceasefire; the exchange of the hostages still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners and detainees from Gaza; the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza; arrangements for humanitarian aid deliveries; and post-war governance of the territory.

President Trump’s negotiators, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, were expected to depart the US this evening and arrive in Egypt on Wednesday, a source familiar with the talks told the BBC.

“We have a really good chance of making a deal, and it’ll be a lasting deal,” the president told reporters at the White House on Monday.

In Tel Aviv’s Hostages Square earlier, 29-year-old Hagar – whose brother survived the attack on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were killed and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen – told the BBC: “No place feels like home anymore and until all the hostages come back none of us will feel safe.”

“When we see everybody home again, we can breathe again. Then we can start to recover,” she added.

Watch: BBC reports from Nova festival site

Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s residence in Jerusalem, people gathered to show their support for the families of the hostages. Israel says 48 remain in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be alive.

Demonstrator Atalia Regev told the BBC: “We need to do every compromise needed for the hostages to come back home. But we really want assurances that we will be safe.”

Opinion polls now consistently show that around 70% of Israelis want the war to end in exchange for the release of the hostages.

At the site of Nova festival, mourners gathered to pay their respects.

From there, the boom of Israelis air strikes and artillery could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses said the intense Israeli bombardment continued.

In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were reported in the early hours of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.

“When the evening comes, the fear comes with it,” displaced Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli air strike last year, told the BBC.

“Me and my three children are afraid of the air strikes. All the night we are sleeping together, holding each other, especially my smallest child who puts his head on me all night.”

“Every second we look at the news to see what happened. And I’m afraid that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the war will come back to us.”

Israel has continued heavy bombardment of Gaza during the indirect peace talks

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City said it had received the bodies of six people by the afternoon, including three killed in an Israeli strike in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Nasser hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis said another two dead people had been brought there. One of them was killed by Israeli forces while seeking aid to the south, medics said.

Unicef spokesman James Elder described how mothers and wounded children were “lining the corridor floors” of Nasser, and that premature babies were having to share a single bed or oxygen source.

“In one of the paediatric rooms, there were three babies and three mums on a single bed, one source of oxygen, and the mothers would rotate the oxygen 20 minutes to each child,” he told Reuters news agency. “This is the level of desperation mums have now got to.”

Gaza’s health ministry said 25 of the territory’s 38 hospitals were now out of service, and that the remaining 13 were only operating partially.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military said that a rocket was launched from northern Gaza into Israel on Tuesday morning, triggering sirens in Netiv HaAsara. The projectile fell in the area and that no injuries or damage were reported, it added.

International journalists have been banned by Israel from entering the Gaza Strip independently since the start of the war, making verifying claims from both sides difficult.

Samantha Saturn steps down as Chief Marketing Officer at SESAC Music Group

SESAC Music Group, owner of the performance rights org SESAC, has announced that Samantha Saturn is leaving her role as the company’s Chief Marketing Officer after seven years in the role.

SESAC credits Saturn with “elevating SESAC Music Group’s profile, leading brand transformation, expanding communications strategy, and driving digital growth across the company’s portfolio.”

Saturn “provided tremendous value and leadership to SESAC Music Group, guiding our brand and communications with vision, creativity, and impact,” SESAC Music Group Chairman and CEO John Josephson said in a statement issued on Tuesday (October 7).

“Her leadership was instrumental in our digital growth and in strengthening our relationships across the music industry. While we will miss her greatly, I am excited to see Samantha begin a new chapter, one she is excited about.”

Saturn called her time at SESAC “one of the most rewarding professional experiences of my career,” adding she’s “grateful to have worked alongside such a talented global team of passionate music fans, dedicated to driving value for songwriters, composers, and artists as well as music publishers and record labels.”

She added: “My passion as a creative leader focused on driving innovation and revenue will continue to be my focus as I move into my next chapter in the music industry.” Saturn did not elaborate on her plans going forward.

SESAC Music Group, which has been owned by investment giant Blackstone since 2017, recently completed a USD $889 million whole business securitization (WBS), reflecting the growing music industry trend of turning to bond markets to fund growth. The WBS issuance was three times oversubscribed, reflecting strong demand for the bonds.

The notes were backed by “substantially all” of SESAC Music Group’s businesses, including the SESAC PRO, Harry Fox Agency (HFA), AudioSalad, HAAWK and other businesses.

Its PRO represents artists including Ariana Grande, Kurt Cobain, Jack Harlow, Billie Joe Armstrong and Axl Rose, and composers of music in TV shows like Seinfeld, Grey’s Anatomy, Suits and Modern Family, along with films like Cars 3, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Frozen and Napoleon Dynamite.

SESAC was thrown into the news cycle last fall when songs by SESAC-represented artists and songwriters became inaccessible on YouTube in the US due to a licensing dispute between the PRO and the video platform.

Songs from artists like Adele, Kendrick Lamar, Nirvana, Bob Dylan, Green Day, Mariah Carey and R.E.M. disappeared for US users on YouTube, but were reinstated a few days later when SESAC and YouTube reached a new licensing agreement.Music Business Worldwide

Israel Reflects on Two Years Since October 7 | News

Two years after October 7, talks in Egypt could bring an end to the war in Gaza. Inside Israel, divisions are widening, isolation is deepening, and the cost of war is harder to ignore. What does this moment reveal about the country’s shifting sense of itself?

7 Innovative Approaches to Sustain Ideas Beyond Their Usual Life Span

Avoiding the Idea Graveyard

Every corporate innovation leader has seen good ideas get buried fast. They begin with energy, gather support, and then vanish into what many call the “idea graveyard.” Halloween fits the metaphor, but the problem is year-round: most organizations struggle not with generating ideas but with keeping them alive long enough to prove their value.

German mayor in critical condition after stabbing, according to police

0

A newly-elected mayor in western Germany has been stabbed and left critically injured near her home, police say.

Iris Stalzer, 57, is a member of the centre-left Social Democratic party (SPD) and became the mayor of Herdecke in the North-Rhine Westphalia state in September.

Local police say a major operation is under way in the small town. Investigators say all avenues are being explored, but they are not ruling out a family connection.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned what he called “a heinous act”, adding: “We fear for the life of the mayor-elect, Iris Stalzer, and hope for a full recovery.”

The SPD said its party members were deeply shocked by the attack.

Officials say Stalzer’s two adopted children – a daughter, 17, and a 15-year-old son – made an emergency call to authorities at midday local time (11:00 BST).

The children were later taken away for questioning and forensic investigation. A reporter at the scene observed a teenager getting into a police patrol car.

This summer there was an incident of domestic violence in the family, which was recorded by the police, security sources said.

Fifth Third Bancorp to Acquire Comerica in $10.9 Billion All-Stock Deal, Creating 9th Largest U.S. Bank

0

Fifth Third Bancorp is buying Comerica for $10.9 billion in an all-stock deal, tying up two big regional banks.

The buyout will create the 9th largest U.S. bank with approximately $288 billion in assets, the companies said Monday.

The combined company will have operations in the Southeast, Texas and California, and will greatly solidify Fifth Third’s position in the Midwest. It is anticipated that over half of Fifth Third’s branches will be located in the Southeast, Texas, Arizona and California by 2030.

“This combination marks a pivotal moment for Fifth Third as we accelerate our strategy to build density in high-growth markets and deepen our commercial capabilities,” Fifth Third Bank Chairman and CEO Tim Spence said in a statement. “Comerica’s strong middle market franchise and complementary footprint make this a natural fit.”

Comerica’s stockholders will receive 1.8663 Fifth Third shares for each share they own. This representing $82.88 per share as of Fifth Third’s closing stock price on Friday.

Fifth Third shareholders will own about 73% of the combined company, while Comerica shareholders will own approximately 27%.

There has been some consolidation in the regional bank sector recently.

A month ago, PNC Financial said that it would buy Colorado-based FirstBank for $4.1 billion, giving PNC a substantial presence in the Colorado banking market as well as Arizona.

The FirstBank acquisition would make PNC the largest bank in the Denver market, and give it more than 70 branches in Arizona. PNC will also grow to roughly $575 billion in assets.

PNC is typically referred to as a super regional bank, a group of large national banks that are significant in size, often hundreds of billions in assets and hundreds of branches, but are dwarfed in size by the banking giants Wells Fargo, Bank of America and JPMorgan Chase, who have size and scale that the super regionals cannot replicate.

Three members of Comerica’s board will join the board of Fifth Third, based in Cincinnati, once the deal is complete. Chairman and CEO Curt Farmer of Comerica, based in Dallas, will serve as vice chair and Peter Sefzik, Comerica’s chief banking officer, will lead Fifth Third’s wealth and asset Management business.

The deal is expected to close at the end of the first quarter of 2026. It still needs the approval of both companies’ shareholders.

Shares of Comerica rose 11% before the opening bell Monday, while shares of Fifth Third sank 2%.
