US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s plane lands safely in the UK after unexpected diversion

0

US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth’s plane made an unscheduled landing in the UK, during a return flight headed for the US, the Pentagon said on X.

The plane carrying Hegseth on his way back from Nato’s Defence Minister meeting in Belgium had a “crack in the aircraft windshield”.

“The plane landed based on standard procedures and everyone onboard, including Secretary Hegseth, is safe,” the government said.

Hegseth later wrote after landing: “All good. Thank God. Continue mission!”

BBC Verify tracked the plane, and found that it began losing altitude off the south-west coast of Ireland. It then headed back east, having dropped to an altitude of 10,000 feet, accoring to FlightRadar24.

At this time, the plane started broadcasting a “7700 squawk code” on its transponder. These are relayed to signify a general emergency onboard, ranging from engine failure to depressurisation to a medical emergency.

In February a government plane carrying Secretary of State Marco Rubio had to turn back due to a crack in the window of the cockpit, as well.

Defence ministers had gathered in Belgium on Wednesday to discuss security in Ukraine.

Which Promotes Vascular Health More?

0

For many, modern life has turned into a chair-bound marathon. Footsteps fade, finger taps rise, and prolonged stillness emerges as a silent threat to public health. Such sedentary lifestyles are fueling a surge in chronic illnesses, including heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and cancer. Beneath the surface, the body’s metabolic machinery falters: insulin loses its edge, blood vessels stiffen, and lipid profiles go rogue.

Vascular function is your body’s blood-flow choreography. It’s how vessels stretch, flex, and respond to deliver oxygen, clear waste, and keep your heart’s rhythm smooth. When the inner lining (endothelium) leads gracefully and arteries stay limber, your cardiovascular health hits all the right notes. In other words, vascular function can help predict the risk of future cardiovascular problems.

Movement is medicine, but which kind?

While aerobic and resistance workouts are the usual prescription, yoga is stepping into the spotlight with its blend of poses, breathwork, and mindfulness. Yet, the jury’s still out. Some studies say yoga didn’t budge key artery metrics in inactive older adults, while others saw yoga benefits for hypertensive postmenopausal women.

A recent study from the University of Sharjah compares yoga and conventional exercise, measuring the impact on vascular function using ultrasound in sedentary individuals.

Surprisingly, the results challenge the popular narrative, finding yoga may not actually be as effective as traditional workouts in boosting vascular health. While both aim to get the blood flowing, it seems that sweat-inducing routines might have the upper hand in keeping arteries supple and responsive.

This study zooms in on a pool of published data, methodically analyzing randomized controlled trials (RCTs), controlled clinical trials (CCTs), and comparative studies to ensure a rigorous and evidence-based approach. It assessed vascular function using high-precision ultrasound tools such as flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and pulse wave velocity (PWV).

Co-author Dr. Leena David, a medical diagnostic imaging specialist and lecturer at the University of Sharjah, likens blood vessels to flexible garden hoses, emphasizing that when they lose their elasticity, the risk of cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks and strokes, rises.

“The study shows that structured exercise keeps those hoses flexible, while yoga provides some benefits but not as reliably,” David explained. “Middle-aged and older adults often notice improvements from yoga, but younger adults might not.”

The review lined up 10 studies, half exploring yoga, half diving into diverse exercise routines. On one side: Hatha, Bikram, and Vinyasa yoga, mostly US-based, gently nudging sedentary adults (18–70 years) into 8–12 weeks of mindful movement, tracked through vascular metrics like arterial compliance and pulse wave velocity.

On the other, a mixed bag of motion: Tai Chi’s flow, Pilates’ precision, HIIT’s intensity, and even quick desk-bound wiggles. These exercise interventions ranged from one-off bursts to 24-week marathons, each testing how far a little movement can go in reviving vascular vitality.

Yoga interventions showed uneven results. Some studies found yoga helps improve endothelial function, particularly in older adults. But others saw no significant shifts in how flexible or responsive arteries become, even after a few months of steady practice. The effects appear to depend on age, baseline health, and the body’s response to gentle movement.

Meanwhile, exercise interventions yielded more consistent muscle gains. Tai Chi and Reformer Pilates improved endothelial function, while high-intensity interval training (HIIT), especially in cold settings, helped maintain the suppleness of arteries.

The findings indicate exercise, especially aerobic workouts with guidance, helps blood vessels work better. But don’t count on those quick desk stretches – micro-breaks during long sitting spells offered minimal vascular perks. This suggests the intensity and duration of your exercise matter more; your blood vessels need more than a quick stretch to truly thrive.

The authors note that for sedentary individuals, structured exercise programs tend to show more consistent improvements in vascular function than yoga. However, for some yoga can still be really helpful, especially in middle-aged and older adults, where its benefits are more reliably evident.

The findings highlight that one-size-fits-all approaches do not work for vascular health. Clinicians should consider a patient’s age, their initial vascular condition, and the type of intervention, whether it’s yoga, aerobic exercise, or another approach, before prescribing lifestyle changes. Personalization seems to be key to better outcomes.

David points out that “even simple routines can make arteries more resilient,” explaining that “blood vessels have a memory, and every workout helps them forget the damage of sitting all day.” She likens prolonged sitting to “the new smoking: silent, sneaky, and stealing years from your arteries,” and calls movement “the perfect antidote.”

Although yoga remains a culturally rich and accessible option, the study indicates it may fall short for consistent cardiovascular improvements. For optimal vascular benefits, more vigorous forms of exercise may be necessary.

The new study was published in Advances in Integrative Medicine.

Federal pressure forces Meta to delete ICE surveillance watchdog page

0

Meta has removed a Facebook page used to track the presence of immigration agents at the request of the Department of Justice, the company confirmed on Tuesday.

Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a post on X that “following outreach” from the DOJ, Facebook removed a “large group page” that was being used to target ICE officials.

Meta said in a statement that the group “was removed for violating our policies against coordinated harm.”

Meta is the latest tech company to restrict tools used to track ICE agents on its platform. Earlier this month, Apple and Google blocked downloads of phone apps that flag sightings of U.S. immigration agents, just hours after the Trump administration demanded that one particularly popular iPhone app be taken down.

Bondi has said that such tracking puts Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers at risk. But users and developers of the apps say it’s their First Amendment right to capture what ICE is doing in their neighborhoods — and maintain that most users turn to these platforms in an effort to protect their own safety as President Donald Trump steps up aggressive immigration enforcement across the country.

While a Facebook group for ICE sightings in Chicago does appear to have been taken down, as of Tuesday evening, dozens of other groups, some with thousands of members, remained visible on Facebook.

Former Kenyan Prime Minister Passes Away in India at the Age of 80

Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga has died at the age of 80, family sources have told the BBC.

Odinga died on Wednesday while receiving medical treatment at a hospital in India. He collapsed during a morning walk and was taken to Devamatha Hospital, which said he had suffered a cardiac arrest. It said he did not respond to resuscitation measures and was “declared dead at 09:52” local time (04:22 GMT).

In recent weeks, there has been speculation about his health, although family members and political allies had dismissed reports suggesting he was critically ill.

President William Ruto paid tribute to Odinga as a “beacon of courage” and “father of our democracy”.

“Raila Amolo Odinga is truly a once-in-a-generation leader. A man whose ideals transcended politics, and whose legacy will shape the destiny of Kenya for generations to come,” Ruto said in a live address to the nation.

A seven-day period of mourning has also been declared. Odinga will be also be accorded a state funeral with full military honours, Ruto said.

Other Kenyan politicians and world leaders have been sending their condolences, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who described Odinga as a “towering statesman and a cherished friend of India”.

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa said he was a “leader who placed the interests of his country and continent first” while Zambia’s Hakainde Hichilema described Odinga as “a towering advocate for democracy”, whose legacy would endure.

On Wednesday, Kenya’s parliament observed a minute’s silence in his honour and scheduled a session on Thursday for lawmakers to pay tribute.

The Kenyan president had earlier visited Odinga’s family home in Nairobi and expressed his condolences to his widow Ida Odinga and other family members.

A delegation led by Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Minister Musalia Mudavadi and Odinga’s widow is expected to travel to India to oversee the arrangements to repatriate his body.

Odinga’s supporters have been pouring onto the streets to mourn, especially in his political strongholds of western Kenya and parts of Nairobi.

A political mobiliser and towering figure in Kenyan politics, Odinga ran unsuccessfully for the presidency five times. He rejected the results on each occasion, often saying that victory had been stolen from him.

He was vindicated by Kenya’s highest court after the 2017 elections, when it annulled Uhuru Kenyatta’s victory and ordered fresh polls. However, he boycotted the rerun, demanding electoral reforms.

Odinga later made up with Kenyatta, stunning the nation when the two shook hands in 2018 – ending months of tension.

The disputed election of 2007, in which Odinga claimed he was cheated of victory by Mwai Kibaki, led to the biggest crisis in Kenya’s history.

Violence erupted around the country, resulting in 1,200 deaths and about 600,000 people were forced to flee their homes.

To resolve the crisis, a power-sharing agreement was brokered by former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, leading to the formation of a unity government in which Odinga became prime minister.

He has often reconciled with the incumbent president after contentious elections.

After his most recent defeat in 2022, he later joined President Ruto in a so-called broad-based government, which brought several of his allies into key positions.

He defended the move as necessary for national unity, coming in the aftermath of watershed nationwide protests last year that culminated in the storming of parliament. Dozens of protesters were killed in confrontations with security officers.

The Ruto administration backed Odinga’s bid to become chairperson of the African Union Commission, in elections held earlier this year. Despite strong regional support, he lost to Djibouti’s Mahmoud Ali Youssouf.

Odinga inspired a passionate and loyal following throughout his political career, especially in western Kenya, where he was born.

His supporters called him “Baba” (Father), “Agwambo” (Act of God), and “Tinga” (Tractor) – drawn from his party’s symbol during the 1997 elections.

He was widely regarded as a master strategist and mass mobiliser, often drawing huge crowds to his political rallies, and he had a deep ability to connect with ordinary people.

He will be remembered for his unwavering fight for democratic freedoms and human rights.

He was a former political prisoner, and holds the record for being Kenya’s longest-serving detainee. His struggle against one-party dictatorship saw him detained twice (from 1982 to 1988 and 1989 to 1991) during the rule of Daniel arap Moi.

He was initially imprisoned for trying to stage a coup in 1982, which propelled him on to the national stage.

For most of his political life, Odinga has been seen as symbol of resistance and political reform and his death leaves a vacuum about who can fill his shoes and carry on his legacy.

He is the son of Jaramogi Odinga, Kenya’s first vice-president, who walked out of government after falling out with then-leader Jomo Kenyatta, Uhuru Kenyatta’s father.

Too Lost invests a substantial amount in catalog acquisition startup AntiFragile Equity Partners.

Digital distributor Too Lost has made another significant investment in an independent company.

Too Lost is backing AntiFragile Equity Partners, a startup founded in 2024 that acquires and monetizes ‘undervalued’ music rights catalogs, with a “seven-figure” investment.

The deal (worth between $1 million and over $9 million) combines Too Lost‘s distribution infrastructure with AntiFragile’s catalog acquisition model.

The AntiFragile investment follows Too Lost’s recent “seven-figure” investment in Rebellion Records, an independent label founded in 2023.

AntiFragile Equity Partners says that it targets master recordings and publishing rights from mid-tier artists with established fanbases but unrealized streaming and sync potential.

The company uses playlist campaigns, social media advertising, and AI-driven analytics to increase revenue from its catalog holdings, sometimes achieving double or triple-digit growth.

Tom Sarig, who founded AntiFragile Equity Partners, brings 28 years of music industry experience to the venture. His career spans a decade in A&R at major labels including MCA/Universal, TVT Records, Arista Records, and A&M Records; 12 years running management company Esther Creative Group, where his roster included Lou Reed, Bryan Ferry, Violent Femmes, and CAKE; and since 2017, operating independent label AntiFragile Music and publishing company SarigSongs.

“This investment isn’t just capital. It’s strategic rocket fuel that brings us closer to our mission: unlocking value from overlooked music rights and delivering elevated returns to creators and investors alike.”

Tom Sarig, AntiFragile Equity Partners

SarigSongs represented artists including Cannons, Mipso, Jake Isaac, Fox Stevenson, Jamie Drake and more.

Commenting on Too Lost’s investment, Sarig said: “We’ve admired what Too Lost has built from the ground up: artist-first, tech-native, and fiercely independent.

“This investment isn’t just capital. It’s strategic rocket fuel that brings us closer to our mission: unlocking value from overlooked music rights and delivering elevated returns to creators and investors alike.”

The investment will fund expansion of AntiFragile’s acquisition pipeline and bolster its streaming and sync marketing operations.

Too Lost launched in 2020 and now serves more than 400,000 artists and labels, distributing over 7 million songs to about 450 digital service providers including Spotify, Apple Music, and TikTok.

“AntiFragile is building something we deeply believe in: a new kind of music IP investment company focused on the long tail, not the top 1%.”

Gregory Hirschhorn, Too Lost

It operates from New York City with additional offices in Los Angeles and Reykjavík. Too Lost was recognized on the 2025 Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing private companies in America.

The company provides software-as-a-service for independent music rightsholders, handling distribution, monetization and rights protection globally.

Gregory Hirschhorn, CEO of Too Lost, said: “AntiFragile is building something we deeply believe in: a new kind of music IP investment company focused on the long tail, not the top 1%.”

Added Hirschhorn: “Tom has an incredible track record, and we’re excited to back his vision of empowering artists and catalog owners in the new music economy.”

Elsewhere, last month, Too Lost partnered with direct-to-fan platform EVEN, integrating the latter company’s commerce infrastructure directly into Too Lost’s dashboard, allowing artists to sell music, content, merchandise, tickets, and exclusive experiences directly to superfans.
