Massive crowds gather at Kenyan airport as it shuts down to receive ex-PM’s body

0

Operations were briefly suspended at Kenya’s main airport after thousands of mourners turned out to receive the body of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, a day after he died in India.

Large crowds of mourners carrying twigs and palm branches breached security at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) immediately after the body of the former leader arrived on Thursday morning.

Authorities said mourners gained access to restricted areas, prompting a “precautionary closure” to allow security teams to restore order and ensure safety.

The airport later said operations had been restored following the shutdown, which lasted about two hours.

Because of the unexpectedly huge crowds, the public viewing ceremony for his body has been moved to Nairobi’s Moi International Sports Centre, rather than inside the parliament building.

Mourners thronged the streets and other locations in the capital as they waited to welcome Odinga’s body.

Huge crowds gathered on the highway from the airport, at Lee Funeral Home where the body was first expected, and around parliament.

“I came here at six in the morning. We have been at the airport to welcome Baba [Odinga’s nickname], we have not yet seen him. We are waiting and we hope we’ll see him, we’ll not leave until we do. We are sad, we have been left as orphans. He is our father,” one mourner told the BBC near the airport.

The state funeral will be held at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi on Friday and on Saturday his body will be transported to Kisumu, a city in western Kenya on the shores of Lake Victoria – his political stronghold.

Members of the public will get a chance to view the body before he is buried on Sunday at his farm in Bondo, about 60km west of Kisumu.

According to the family, it was Odinga’s wish to be laid to rest within the shortest time possible, ideally within 72 hours.

The 80-year-old former prime minister collapsed during a morning walk in India on Wednesday morning and he was taken to Devamatha Hospital, about 50km (30 miles) east of the port city of Kochi.

A seven-day period of mourning has been declared. Odinga will also be accorded a state funeral with full military honours, Ruto said.

Odinga spent many years as an opposition leader, losing five presidential campaigns, most recently three years ago.

Managing Knee Osteoarthritis Pain is Best with Aerobic Exercise

0

In a review of more than 200 clinical trials, scientists have identified which exercise offers the most benefits in relieving the symptoms of knee osteoarthritis in both the short and long term. It’s the most comprehensive look at physical activity in treating the condition yet.

In an international study led by researchers from Zhejiang University in China, the data of 15,684 people with knee osteoarthritis was pooled to compare six major exercise types, which included activities like walking and cycling, and tracked how their effects changed over time. The scientists focused on whether any one type of workout could improve pain, function, gait performance and quality of life.

To best represent the data from so many studies, the team slotted exercises into categories: aerobic (brisk walking, cycling, aquatic aerobics, treadmill work, stair climbing); strengthening (resistance training targeting quadriceps and hamstrings, typically with bands, weights, or body-weight squats, leg presses); flexibility (stretching and range-of-motion routines); neuromotor (balance, coordination and agility training); mind-body (tai chi, yoga, qigong, Pilates); and mixed (a combination of the others). For mixed exercises, 88% included strengthening, most often paired with neuromotor, flexibility or aerobic components.

The results were then divided into three follow-up periods: four weeks (short-term), 12 weeks (mid-term) and 24 weeks (long-term) after participants began exercising, substituting the closest data when exact time frames weren’t available. And this structure revealed how different types of exercise shine at different stages of recovery.

What they found was that by 12 weeks, aerobic exercise such as brisk walking, cycling or pool workouts produced the biggest improvements in function, roughly doubling the benefit seen with resistance training. They also offered the most relief, cutting reported pain scores by more than a full standard deviation compared with control groups – a large effect by medical standards. And aerobic exercise had about a 70% probability of being the best overall intervention across all measured outcomes.

Aerobic exercise performed strongly across all follow-up periods, relieving short- and mid-term pain, improving short-, mid- and long-term function, and improving short- and mid-term gait performance and quality of life.

“Patients should engage regularly in structured aerobic activities, such as walking, cycling, or swimming, to optimize symptom management,” the researchers noted. “If aerobic exercise is not possible owing to individual limitations, alternative forms of structured physical activity may still be beneficial. Patients should consult healthcare professionals to develop an individualized exercise plan that aligns with their physical capabilities and treatment goals.”

Mixed programs also performed well, especially those that combined strength with balance or stretching exercises. These routines – typically involving leg presses, banded knee extensions, sit-to-stands and glute work two or three times a week – delivered moderate, clinically meaningful improvements in mobility and daily function at 12 weeks. However, they didn’t ease pain as effectively as aerobic exercise, which remained the clear leader for symptom relief.

Meanwhile, mind-body exercise appeared to boost short-term function, neuromotor activities probably resulted in a large increase in short-term gait performance, and strengthening and mixed exercise seemed to improve function the most at the mid-term mark. It’s worth noting that there were no more adverse safety events in the exercise cohort overall, compared with the control group.

And even though none of these exercises are harmful, neuromotor training on its own appeared to be the least helpful for managing knee OA symptoms, especially pain relief. The research suggests that it’s valuable only as an add-on to build stability and confidence once pain is under control and strength has been built.

Osteoarthritis (OA) affects around 528 million people worldwide, including 23% of people aged 40 years and over, and is the result of progressive damage to articular cartilage, which causes pain, stiffness and reduced mobility. And while any joint can develop this, it’s most common in the knees – almost 30% of individuals over 45 show signs of OA in this joint, with half of those people having severe issues because of it.

Right now, there are no clear guidelines on which exercise is best – just that physical activity is important and considered a frontline treatment. The researchers hope this study will help address that. In June, another team of researchers looked at non-drug treatments for knee OA, noting that there’s a lot of information and, again, much debate as to what’s best over time – and what isn’t.

Here, it was clear that the best exercise is one that moves the legs rhythmically and raises the heart rate, ideally on most days of the week. Adding targeted strength and balance training improves control and stability, and including stretching or something like yoga or tai chi can help maintain comfort and consistency in the long-term. However, aerobic exercise should form the foundation, with the other activities sprinkled into a routine.

While the researchers noted the study’s limitations – indirect comparisons between exercise types, some trials lacking long-term data, and how small studies may have influenced the short-term effects data – the findings offer a comprehensive guide for patients and clinicians as they look for the best ways of managing the condition. The researchers also noted that in their efforts to pool all existing data, they found there was a serious lack of larger and long-term trials – which seems remiss considering knee OA is a chronic and progressive condition.

“Only a few studies (n=12, 5.5%) have reported follow-up data beyond one year,” they wrote. “Therefore, future research should prioritize well designed, adequately powered trials with longer follow-up durations to better assess the durability of exercise effects over time. Finally, Kellgre-Lawrence grading was recorded to classify the severity of knee osteoarthritis in the included studies. However, nearly all studies included participants with different Kellgre-Lawrence grades, making it difficult to distinguish the therapeutic effects of exercise intervention on patients with different degrees of knee osteoarthritis. Future research focusing on disease severity could help clinicians make more informed choices regarding exercise therapy for patients with knee osteoarthritis.”

Of course, while the data makes a strong case for aerobic exercise, as always, consult your medical professional before undertaking any new workout plans.

“Exercise treatment offers obvious benefits for individuals with knee osteoarthritis,” the researchers concluded. “With moderate certainty quality evidence, aerobic exercise might be the best exercise modality for improvements in pain, function, gait performance, and quality of life. This study presents a comprehensive and up-to-date analysis of the effects of exercise intervention as a treatment strategy for knee osteoarthritis, which could assist clinicians in prescribing therapy to improve treatment outcomes for patients.”

The study was published in the journal The BMJ.

Explosions in Ecuador linked to local criminal gang and ex-FARC dissidents, authorities say

0

The bridge explosions occur just hours after a car bomb went off outside a shopping mall in Guayaquil, Ecuador’s largest city.

Explosions have rocked different parts of Ecuador, with officials accusing a local criminal gang and Colombian ex-FARC dissidents of targeting two bridges in retaliation for a major military operation against illegal miners.

It is the latest wave of violence to have engulfed the South American nation in recent years. The government of President Daniel Noboa has been struggling to beat back criminal groups, who have shifted their drug smuggling from more militarised countries like Colombia to historically peaceful Ecuador.

Explosives were placed on bridges “to block traffic”, Transport Minister Roberto Luque wrote on X on Wednesday, describing the acts as “terrorism”. No casualties have been reported, though roads leading to the affected areas remain closed.

Interior Minister John Reimberg accused Ecuadorian gang Los Lobos, which is designated as a “foreign terrorist organisation” by the United States, and former rebels of the now-defunct movement Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, with ties to the gang, of being behind the blasts.

Reimberg said the attacks came after security operations destroyed “illegal mining operations” in northern Ecuador and detained ex-FARC members.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the blasts, and no arrests have been made.

The US State Department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs condemned the attacks in a post on X, calling them “brazen terrorist attacks against the Ecuadorian people”.

“We remain committed to the fight to eradicate organized crime and stand ready to support Ecuador in holding those responsible to account,” it wrote in a statement.

The Associated Press news agency obtained a police report that confirmed the bridge structure in the city of Naranjal, about 290km (180 miles) southwest of the capital, Quito, sustained damage “from the suspected detonation”.

Marcela Aguinaga, prefect of the Guayas province, where Naranjal is located, condemned the “criminal act” on X.

The other explosion occurred on a bridge connecting the provinces of Azuay and El Oro in southern Ecuador. The emergency services reported on X that the route was closed due to a “possible collapse” of the structure. Images released by local media showed rubble, twisted metal from the bridge, and shattered windscreens on at least two buses.

The bridge explosions occurred just hours after a car bomb went off outside a shopping mall in Guayaquil, Ecuador’s largest city, killing one person and injuring many. A second vehicle containing explosives was found nearby but was deactivated.

The Attorney General’s Office said it had launched an investigation into the blasts, while the government offered a reward for any information leading to the identification and capture of those responsible.

Noboa, speaking at a public event in Guayaquil on Wednesday, said criminal groups were attempting to destabilise the government and that the country cannot “back down before people who want to terrorise Ecuadorian families”.

In March, a vehicle exploded outside Ecuador’s largest and most dangerous prison on the outskirts of Guayaquil, killing a prison guard.

In 2023, Ecuador saw several more car bomb attacks as part of a wave of criminal violence that has plagued the Andean nation since early 2021.

DBS CEO Tan Su Shan emphasizes the importance of diversification in navigating Trump’s tariffs

0

DBS CEO Tan Su Shan took on the top job just before an economic storm struck. The veteran of the Singapore-based bank, Southeast Asia’s largest, assumed the role in March, just a few days before U.S. President Donald Trump slapped steep tariffs on much of the world economy. That posed a challenge for DBS, which serves clients across China, Southeast Asia, and India.

Her response to an uncertain economy? Diversify. “If you only sell to the U.S., you have to diversify,” Tan said at the Fortune Most Powerful Women Summit on Tuesday.

Last week, Trump threatened to impose 100% tariffs on Chinese goods by Nov. 1 in retaliation for Beijing’s expanded export controls on rare earth minerals. The U.S. president has also slapped 50% tariffs on Brazil and India, two other major non-Western economies.

On Tuesday, Tan suggested that Trump’s broad-based tariffs could be forging new links between these different economies. “China and India, historically, are not that close,” Tan said. “This might actually create more opportunities for Chinese and Indian companies to do more together, certainly on the supply chain.”

Earlier this year, China and India agreed to resume direct flights, which had been suspended since the COVID pandemic. Relations between the two economies had been cool since deadly border clashes in 2020.

“It will take time to build trust [between India and China],” Tan said Tuesday. “But the opportunities are there.”

CEO: ‘Chief energy officer

Tan is DBS’s first-ever female CEO. She’s also No. 1 on Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Asia ranking and No. 6 on its global MPW ranking.

Yet Tan downplayed that accolade on Tuesday. “I don’t know how I feel about the word ‘powerful,’” she noted. “It really is the team that gets stuff done.”

“It’s my job as a CEO to be the chief energy officer, to give energy to the team and make sure that everyone is headed in the right direction,” she said.

Learning from an airline

On stage, Tan also recalled her early years at DBS. The institution is now Southeast Asia’s most valuable company and winner of countless awards for good digital products and customer service, but when Tan joined DBS in 2010, the bank had a decidedly different reputation.

“We were the worst bank,” Tan recalled. “Worst bank for customer service, worst bank for the longest queues, worst bank for product.”

The bank, led by then-CEO Piyush Gupta, found inspiration in Singapore’s flagship carrier, Singapore Airlines. (Both companies boast Temasek, Singapore’s state investment company, as a major shareholder.)

“We were all marshaled to Singapore Airlines’s headquarters by the airport and taught how to offer good ‘service quality,’” Tan explained. “Our first learning was: How do you give good service, and how are you respectful, easy to deal with, and dependable?”

DBS has now grown from a staid government-linked bank to a leader in the country’s banking sector. When Tan joined in 2010, DBS generated 7.1 billion Singapore dollars ($5.5 billion in current exchange rates) in total income. That figure had grown to 22.3 billion Singapore dollars ($17.2 billion) last year.

DBS shares are up by almost 35% over the past 12 months; Singapore’s other “Big Three” banks, OCBC and UOB, are up by 11% and 7% respectively.

Trump claims Modi has agreed to cease purchasing Russian oil

0

President Donald Trump has said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has agreed to stop buying Russian oil, as the US seeks to put economic pressure on the Kremlin as part of efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

Trump told reporters he had received assurances from Modi that India would halt its purchases “within a short period of time”, which he called “a big stop”.

The US president has sought to leverage India’s purchases of Russian oil in his trade war, but Delhi has so far resisted.

Reacting to the Trump remarks, an Indian government spokesman said discussions were “ongoing” with the US administration which had “shown interest in deepening energy co-operation with India”.

“Our consistent priority to safeguard the interests of the Indian consumer in a volatile energy scenario. Our import policies are guided entirely by this objective,” the spokesman said.

Oil and gas are Russia’s biggest exports, and Moscow’s biggest customers include China, India and Turkey.

“Now I’ve got to get China to do the same thing,” Trump said in the Oval Office on Wednesday, as part of his administration’s broader push to cut off Moscow’s energy funding.

The Trump administration is also pushing Japan to stop importing oil and gas from Russia, and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he communicated this “expectation” to visiting Japanese Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato on Wednesday.

India cannot “immediately” halt oil shipments, Trump said, adding that the shift will be “a little bit of a process, but the process is going to be over with soon”.

The Trump administration has imposed 50% tariffs on goods from India, levies that Trump has characterised as punishment against Delhi for buying Russian oil and weapons.

The tariffs – which took effect in August and are among the highest in the world – include a 25% penalty for transactions with Russia that are a key source of funds for its war in Ukraine.

Modi has for months stood his ground, arguing that India is neutral in the Russia-Ukraine war despite his country’s ties with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

Indian officials have called the Trump administration’s accusations that Delhi profits from Russia’s war in Ukraine a double standard, citing ongoing trade with Russia in the US and Europe.

India relies on Russian crude oil, which Delhi has continued to buy at a discount, to support its economy – the fifth largest in the world.

The dispute over Russian oil has strained the relationship between Trump and Modi, although the US president on Wednesday praised the Indian leader as a “great man”.

Modi said last week that he spoke with Trump and that they “reviewed good progress achieved in trade negotiations”.

Big music publishers sign AI licensing agreements with lyrics and music data company Musixmatch

0

Lyrics and music data company Musixmatch says it has signed AI licensing deals with the publishing arms of all three major music companies.

The deals with Sony Music Publishing, Universal Music Publishing Group and Warner Chappell Music give Musixmatch access to catalogs of over 15 million musical works, with which the company plans to develop new analytical tools and “non-generative AI services.”

“The deals establish Musixmatch as the first company to partner with three top music publishers and comprehensively commit to building new ethically trained services and revenue streams using authorized catalogs,” Musixmatch said in a statement on Wednesday (October 15).

According to a report at Billboard, the licensing deals are being done on a trial basis, and the music publishers will be compensated for the use of the catalogs.

Citing a source close to the deal, Billboard said the tools could include a large language model (LLM) that can analyze song lyrics and metadata, could be used to search the catalogs for a specific song. For instance, a movie studio looking for a song to license could ask the LLM for songs from a particular period with a particular theme.

Or it could be used for market analysis, by asking questions like “Why are love songs in decline?” or “What consumer brands were most frequently referenced in song lyrics last year?”

These tools would be “strictly gated and geared towards music business professionals,” Billboard reported.

“These agreements will ensure the writers of today and tomorrow are compensated for their creative works, not only in today’s marketplace, but also in the dynamic, AI-powered world that is rapidly emerging.”

Massimo Ciociola, Musixmatch

“We’re looking forward to this collaboration with our trusted partners to build and share entirely new revenue streams together,” Musixmatch Founder & CEO Massimo Ciociola said in a statement.

“Put simply: without songwriters, there can be no music industry. These agreements will ensure the writers of today and tomorrow are compensated for their creative works, not only in today’s marketplace, but also in the dynamic, AI-powered world that is rapidly emerging.”

Ciociola added: “Our long-standing partnerships with rights owners enable us to confidently build new services that will properly compensate songwriters while delivering value to music publishers and all who recognize the power of a song to move culture and provide meaning to our world.”

The Musixmatch deals come amid a growing effort in the music industry to have AI developers license the songs they use to train their AI models, rather than – as has often been the case – simply taking the content without authorization.

A recent report from the Financial Times said Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group could be just weeks away from signing licensing deals with major AI companies. Discussions have reportedly included AI firms like Stability AI, Suno, Udio, Klay Vision, and Eleven Labs, which is launching a new generative music tool built on music licensed from Merlin and Kobalt. Major tech companies like Google and Spotify are also said to be part of the licensing talks with the music companies.

Meanwhile, Swedish royalty collection society STIM recently launched what it says is the world’s first AI licensing system from a music rights society.

However, these licenses involve the use of music to train AI for generative purposes, i.e. creating music – something that Musixmatch stressed it doesn’t plan to do.

Italy-headquartered Musixmatch bills itself as the world’s largest lyrics and music data company, boasting partnerships with 225,000 publishers and some 3 million songwriters.

The company is currently embroiled in a legal dispute with rival lyrics provider LyricFind, which sued Musixmatch in a US federal court earlier this year, alleging that an exclusive lyrics licensing deal between Musixmatch and Warner Chappell Music violates US antitrust law.

The case was recently given the green light by a federal judge, who rejected much of Musixmatch’s petition to have the case dismissed.Music Business Worldwide
